This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to design, install, and maintain HVAC control systems and automation in commercial and industrial environments. Participants will gain practical expertise in programmable logic controllers (PLCs), sensors, actuators, and building management system (BMS) integration to optimize energy efficiency and indoor comfort.

Target Audience

This course is designed for HVAC technicians, engineers, and facility managers who seek to upgrade their skills in automation and controls. It is also suitable for electricians and automation specialists transitioning into HVAC systems.

Prerequisites

Basic understanding of HVAC systems and electrical principles. Prior experience with control systems or PLCs is recommended but not mandatory.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of HVAC Systems and Controls

Objectives:
• Understand the basic principles of HVAC systems and their components.
• Identify common control elements and their functions.
• Explain the role of sensors, actuators, and controllers in HVAC automation.
• Distinguish between open-loop and closed-loop control systems.

Topics:
• Overview of HVAC systems: heating, ventilation, air conditioning.
• Key components: compressors, condensers, evaporators, fans, dampers.
• Introduction to control systems: setpoints, feedback, PID control.
• Sensors: temperature, humidity, pressure, flow.
• Actuators: valves, dampers, variable frequency drives.
• Controllers: programmable logic controllers (PLC), direct digital control (DDC).
• Control strategies: on/off, proportional, integral, derivative.
• Safety and energy efficiency basics.

Day 2: Control System Architecture and Communication Protocols

Objectives:
• Describe the architecture of a typical building automation system (BAS).
• Compare common communication protocols used in HVAC controls.
• Explain how field devices integrate with controllers and supervisory systems.
• Interpret control system diagrams and wiring schematics.

Topics:
• BAS architecture: field level, controller level, supervisory level.
• Communication protocols: BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, KNX.
• Network topologies: bus, star, mesh.
• Wiring and termination practices for sensors and actuators.
• Introduction to human-machine interfaces (HMI) and dashboards.
• Troubleshooting communication issues.
• Cybersecurity basics for HVAC networks.
• Practical: reading and interpreting a control schematic.

Day 3: Programming and Configuration of HVAC Controllers

Objectives:
• Program basic logic for HVAC control sequences using industry-standard tools.
• Configure PID loops for temperature and pressure control.
• Set up alarm and notification parameters.
• Demonstrate ability to modify control parameters for optimal performance.

Topics:
• Introduction to controller programming software.
• Ladder logic and function block programming.
• Configuring analog and digital inputs/outputs.
• PID tuning: proportional band, integral time, derivative time.
• Control sequences: morning warm-up, night setback, demand-controlled ventilation.
• Alarm handling and logging.
• Commissioning and testing control programs.
• Practical: programming a simple temperature control loop.

Day 4: Advanced Control Strategies and Energy Optimization

Objectives:
• Implement advanced control strategies for energy efficiency.
• Analyze system performance using trend data and analytics.
• Optimize setpoints and schedules based on occupancy and weather.
• Apply fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) techniques.

Topics:
• Advanced strategies: optimal start/stop, economizer control, demand response.
• Energy optimization: variable air volume (VAV) control, chilled water reset.
• Data analytics: trend logging, performance dashboards.
• Fault detection: identifying sensor drift, stuck actuators, valve leakage.
• Commissioning and retro-commissioning processes.
• Integration with renewable energy systems.
• Practical: analyzing trend data to optimize a chiller plant.
• Case study: energy savings through control improvements.

Day 5: Integration, Troubleshooting, and System Commissioning

Objectives:
• Integrate HVAC controls with other building systems (lighting, fire, security).
• Diagnose and resolve common control system faults.
• Perform system commissioning and documentation.
• Develop a maintenance plan for control systems.

Topics:
• System integration: APIs, gateways, and interoperability.
• Troubleshooting methodology: systematic approach, tools (multimeter, laptop).
• Common faults: communication failures, sensor errors, actuator jams.
• Commissioning: checklists, functional testing, performance verification.
• Documentation: as-built drawings, sequence of operations, O&M manuals.
• Preventative maintenance for controllers and field devices.
• Future trends: IoT, cloud-based controls, AI in HVAC.
• Practical: commissioning a small HVAC control system.

Practicals

Overview

The practicals provide hands-on experience with HVAC control hardware and software, reinforcing theoretical concepts. Learners will wire sensors and actuators, program a controller, tune a PID loop, analyze trend data, and commission a small system. These activities ensure competency in real-world installation, configuration, and troubleshooting.

Practical Activities
  • Wiring and Component Identification — Learners identify and wire sensors (temperature, humidity) and actuators (valves, dampers) to a DDC controller using proper termination techniques. (4h)
  • Controller Programming and PID Tuning — Using programming software, learners create a control sequence for a temperature loop, configure PID parameters, and tune the loop for stable operation. (6h)
  • System Analysis and Fault Diagnosis — Learners analyze trend data from a simulated HVAC system, identify faults (e.g., sensor drift, stuck actuator), and propose corrective actions. (4h)
  • Commissioning a Small HVAC Control System — Learners commission a small HVAC control system: verify wiring, test sequences, adjust setpoints, and document results. (6h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
