Description

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to HVAC fundamentals, covering core principles of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Participants will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to understand, operate, and maintain basic HVAC systems safely and efficiently.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the fundamental principles of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and psychrometrics as they apply to HVAC systems.

Target Audience

This course is designed for technicians, maintenance personnel, and entry-level engineers who are new to the HVAC field or require a solid foundation in HVAC principles.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to HVAC Systems

Objectives:
• Understand the basic principles of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning
• Identify the main components of HVAC systems
• Explain the refrigeration cycle
• Recognise different types of HVAC systems
• Describe the role of HVAC in building comfort and efficiency

Topics:
• Overview of HVAC and its importance
• Basic thermodynamics and heat transfer
• The refrigeration cycle (compression, condensation, expansion, evaporation)
• Main components: compressor, condenser, evaporator, expansion valve
• Types of systems: split, packaged, ducted, ductless
• Introduction to refrigerants and environmental considerations

Day 2: System Components and Functions

Objectives:
• Describe the function of compressors, condensers, evaporators, and metering devices
• Identify different types of each component
• Understand the role of fans, blowers, and ductwork
• Explain the purpose of filters, dampers, and controls
• Recognise common system configurations

Topics:
• Compressors: reciprocating, scroll, screw, centrifugal
• Condensers: air-cooled, water-cooled, evaporative
• Evaporators: types and applications
• Metering devices: TXV, capillary tube, orifice
• Air distribution: fans, ductwork, grilles, diffusers
• Controls: thermostats, pressure switches, safeties

Day 3: Refrigerants and System Performance

Objectives:
• Understand refrigerant properties and environmental impact
• Interpret pressure-enthalpy diagrams
• Calculate superheat and subcooling
• Explain system performance metrics (EER, COP, SEER)
• Identify common system faults

Topics:
• Refrigerant types: CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs, HFOs, natural refrigerants
• Environmental regulations (Montreal Protocol, Kigali Amendment)
• Pressure-enthalpy diagrams and the refrigeration cycle
• Superheat and subcooling measurement and significance
• Performance metrics: EER, COP, SEER, IPLV
• Common system faults: low charge, restrictions, non-condensables

Day 4: Electrical and Control Systems

Objectives:
• Read and interpret electrical schematics
• Identify common electrical components (contactors, relays, capacitors)
• Understand control sequences for heating and cooling
• Troubleshoot basic electrical faults
• Explain the role of smart controls and BMS

Topics:
• Electrical fundamentals: voltage, current, resistance, power
• Wiring diagrams and schematic symbols
• Components: contactors, relays, capacitors, transformers
• Control sequences: cooling, heating, defrost
• Troubleshooting: measuring voltage, current, resistance
• Introduction to building management systems (BMS) and smart thermostats

Day 5: Installation, Maintenance, and Safety

Objectives:
• Apply safe work practices for HVAC systems
• Perform basic installation procedures
• Conduct routine maintenance tasks
• Diagnose and resolve common system issues
• Understand commissioning and handover processes

Topics:
• Safety: PPE, lockout/tagout, refrigerant handling, electrical safety
• Installation: site preparation, mounting, piping, electrical connections
• Maintenance: cleaning coils, replacing filters, checking refrigerant charge
• Troubleshooting: systematic approach, using gauges and meters
• Commissioning: system start-up, performance verification, documentation
• Career paths and professional development in HVAC

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

The practicals provide hands-on experience with HVAC components, tools, and diagnostic equipment. Learners will practice installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting tasks under supervision to reinforce theoretical knowledge.

Practical Activities
  • Component Identification and Tool Use — Learners identify major HVAC components and practice using common tools (manifold gauges, multimeters, thermometers). (3h)
  • Refrigeration Cycle and Charging — Learners connect a working refrigeration system, measure pressures and temperatures, calculate superheat and subcooling, and adjust refrigerant charge. (4h)
  • Electrical Troubleshooting — Learners use schematic diagrams to trace circuits, test components, and diagnose common electrical faults on a training board. (4h)
  • System Installation and Maintenance — Learners perform a simulated installation (mounting, piping, electrical connections) and conduct routine maintenance on an operating system. (3h)
  • Troubleshooting Scenarios — Learners work in teams to diagnose and resolve pre-set faults on a live system, such as low charge, dirty filter, or faulty capacitor. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.

  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
