Maintenance Management Training

SAQA US AATICD-0212 | NQF 5 | Credits 10 | Duration 5 Days
From $1,242 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the principles and practices of effective maintenance management in an industrial or corporate environment. It covers maintenance planning, scheduling, resource allocation, and performance measurement to ensure equipment reliability and operational efficiency.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply maintenance management principles to develop a maintenance plan for a given operational context.
  • Analyze maintenance data to identify trends and recommend corrective actions.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of a maintenance program using key performance indicators.
  • Design a preventive maintenance schedule that optimizes resource utilization and minimizes downtime.
  • Implement a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to track work orders and inventory.
  • Demonstrate leadership in coordinating maintenance teams and ensuring compliance with safety standards.

Target Audience

This course is designed for maintenance supervisors, team leaders, and managers responsible for overseeing maintenance operations in manufacturing, facilities, or service industries.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, some experience in a maintenance or technical environment is beneficial.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Maintenance Management

Objectives:
• Understand the role and importance of maintenance management in industrial operations
• Identify different maintenance strategies and their applications
• Explain the relationship between maintenance and overall business performance

Topics:
• Introduction to maintenance management: definitions and scope
• Types of maintenance: reactive, preventive, predictive, proactive
• Maintenance objectives: reliability, availability, safety, cost
• Overview of maintenance planning and scheduling
• Key performance indicators (KPIs) in maintenance
• Maintenance organisation structures
• Legal and regulatory requirements for maintenance (e.g., OHSA)

Day 2: Maintenance Planning and Scheduling

Objectives:
• Develop a maintenance plan using work order systems
• Apply prioritisation techniques for maintenance tasks
• Create a preventive maintenance schedule

Topics:
• Work order management: creation, execution, closure
• Prioritisation: criticality analysis, urgency, resource availability
• Preventive maintenance program design: frequency, tasks, checklists
• Scheduling techniques: Gantt charts, CPM, PERT
• Resource allocation: labour, materials, tools
• Shutdown planning and turnaround management

Day 3: Condition-Based Maintenance and Reliability

Objectives:
• Explain condition monitoring techniques and their applications
• Calculate reliability metrics such as MTBF and MTTR
• Apply root cause analysis to maintenance failures

Topics:
• Condition monitoring: vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, ultrasonics
• Reliability engineering basics: failure modes, weibull analysis
• Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and Mean Time To Repair (MTTR)
• Root Cause Analysis (RCA) methods: 5 Whys, fishbone diagram
• Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
• Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) principles

Day 4: Maintenance Systems and Data Management

Objectives:
• Navigate a Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
• Analyse maintenance data to improve decision-making
• Manage spare parts inventory effectively

Topics:
• CMMS functionalities: asset register, work orders, history tracking
• Data collection and analysis: downtime tracking, cost analysis
• Key reports: backlog, compliance, KPI dashboards
• Spare parts management: criticality, reorder points, stock optimisation
• Maintenance budgeting and cost control
• Integration with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems

Day 5: Advanced Maintenance Strategies and Continuous Improvement

Objectives:
• Implement Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) pillars
• Apply Lean maintenance principles to reduce waste
• Develop a continuous improvement plan for maintenance processes

Topics:
• Total Productive Maintenance (TPM): autonomous maintenance, planned maintenance
• Lean maintenance: 5S, kaizen, value stream mapping
• Maintenance maturity models: from reactive to world-class
• Benchmarking and best practices
• Change management for maintenance transformation
• Creating a maintenance improvement roadmap

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practicals reinforce theoretical concepts by applying condition monitoring techniques, using a CMMS, and conducting root cause analysis. Learners gain experience with real equipment and software tools used in industry.

Practical Activities
  • Condition Monitoring Demonstration — Learners use vibration analysers and thermographic cameras on a test rig to detect faults. (4h)
  • CMMS Work Order Simulation — Learners create, assign, and close work orders in a simulated CMMS environment. (4h)
  • Root Cause Analysis Exercise — Teams analyse a real-world failure scenario using 5 Whys and fishbone diagrams. (4h)
  • Preventive Maintenance Plan Development — Learners design a preventive maintenance schedule for a given asset, including tasks and frequencies. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
