Behaviour-Based Safety Training

SAQA US AATICD-0291 | NQF 5 | Credits 10 | Duration 5 Days
From $913 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to implement and sustain behaviour-based safety (BBS) programmes in the workplace. It focuses on identifying critical safety behaviours, observing and providing feedback, and fostering a positive safety culture to reduce incidents and injuries.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply the principles of behaviour-based safety to identify and analyse critical safety behaviours in the workplace.
  • Demonstrate the ability to conduct safety observations and provide constructive feedback to improve safe behaviours.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of behaviour-based safety interventions using data and feedback.
  • Design a behaviour-based safety implementation plan tailored to the workplace context.
  • Implement strategies to overcome barriers to behaviour-based safety and sustain positive safety culture.
  • Analyse the role of leadership and employee involvement in the success of behaviour-based safety programmes.

Target Audience

This course is designed for safety officers, team leaders, supervisors, and any employees responsible for promoting safety in the workplace. It is also suitable for those involved in safety committees or continuous improvement initiatives.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Behaviour-Based Safety

Objectives:
• Define behaviour-based safety (BBS) and its core principles
• Explain the historical context and evolution of BBS
• Identify the key elements of a BBS process
• Recognise the role of safety culture in BBS
• Describe the ABC model (Activators, Behaviours, Consequences)

Topics:
• Introduction to BBS: definition and purpose
• The psychology of safety: why people behave unsafely
• Historical development: from safety programs to BBS
• Core components: observation, feedback, and reinforcement
• The ABC model: activators, behaviours, consequences
• Safety culture and its impact on behaviour
• Benefits and limitations of BBS
• Case studies of BBS failures and successes

Day 2: Observation and Data Collection

Objectives:
• Develop effective observation skills
• Design and implement a behaviour observation system
• Use checklists and data collection methods accurately
• Conduct peer-to-peer observations in a non-punitive manner
• Interpret observation data to identify trends

Topics:
• The observation process: what, who, when, and how
• Designing behaviour checklists
• Data collection methods: frequency, sampling, and recording
• Conducting observations: techniques and protocols
• Peer-to-peer observation: building trust and rapport
• Avoiding common observer biases
• Data management: recording, storing, and retrieving
• Introduction to data analysis for BBS

Day 3: Feedback, Reinforcement, and Intervention

Objectives:
• Provide constructive and effective feedback after observations
• Apply reinforcement strategies to encourage safe behaviours
• Develop intervention plans for unsafe behaviours
• Use positive and negative reinforcement appropriately
• Implement corrective actions without blame

Topics:
• The importance of timely and specific feedback
• Feedback models: descriptive, constructive, and coaching
• Reinforcement principles: positive, negative, and extinction
• Designing reinforcement schedules
• Intervention strategies: coaching, retraining, and engineering controls
• Addressing at-risk behaviours: root cause analysis
• Creating action plans for behaviour change
• Role-play: giving feedback in challenging situations

Day 4: Implementing and Managing a BBS Process

Objectives:
• Plan the implementation of a BBS process in an organisation
• Engage stakeholders and gain management commitment
• Develop BBS training and communication plans
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of BBS
• Integrate BBS with existing safety management systems

Topics:
• Steps for implementing BBS: preparation, rollout, and sustainment
• Gaining leadership and worker buy-in
• Communication strategies: awareness campaigns and briefings
• Training requirements for observers and participants
• Integrating BBS with incident investigation and risk assessment
• Monitoring leading and lagging indicators
• Evaluating BBS: metrics, audits, and reviews
• Sustaining momentum: continuous improvement and refreshment

Day 5: Advanced Applications and Sustaining a Safety Culture

Objectives:
• Address challenges and barriers in BBS implementation
• Adapt BBS to diverse work environments
• Foster a culture of safety through leadership and engagement
• Use BBS data for continuous improvement
• Develop a personal action plan for applying BBS in the workplace

Topics:
• Overcoming resistance and maintaining motivation
• BBS in high-risk industries: mining, construction, and manufacturing
• BBS for non-routine and contractor work
• Leadership's role in modelling safe behaviour
• Employee engagement and participation strategies
• Advanced data analytics: predictive and trending
• Case studies of successful BBS programmes
• Developing a roadmap for BBS integration

Practicals

20 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practicals are essential to develop observation, feedback, and data analysis skills. Learners will practice conducting observations in simulated environments, providing feedback, and analysing data to make informed decisions.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Observation Skills and Checklist Design — Learners practice conducting observations using checklists in a simulated workplace, then design their own checklist for a specific task. (5h)
  • Practical 2: Feedback and Communication — Role-play scenarios where learners give and receive feedback on observed behaviours, focusing on constructive and non-confrontational communication. (5h)
  • Practical 3: Data Analysis and Intervention Planning — Using provided observation data, learners analyse trends, identify problem behaviours, and develop intervention plans. (5h)
  • Practical 4: BBS Implementation Simulation — In groups, learners simulate the implementation of a BBS process in a mock company, including planning, stakeholder engagement, and rollout. (5h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
