Hazard Identification (HAZID) Training

SAQA US AATICD-0048 | NQF 5 | Credits 10 | Duration 5 Days
From $1,242 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the skills to identify hazards in the workplace, assess associated risks, and implement appropriate control measures. It covers fundamental HAZID methodologies and legal requirements under South African OHS legislation. Learners will be able to contribute to a safer work environment through systematic hazard identification and risk assessment.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply HAZID techniques to identify physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, and psychosocial hazards in the workplace.
  • Analyze hazard scenarios to determine potential consequences and likelihood of harm.
  • Evaluate existing control measures and recommend improvements based on the hierarchy of controls.
  • Implement a systematic hazard identification process in accordance with South African OHS Act and relevant regulations.
  • Demonstrate the ability to document and communicate hazard findings effectively to stakeholders.

Target Audience

This course is designed for safety officers, team leaders, supervisors, and any employees responsible for workplace safety in industries such as manufacturing, construction, mining, and logistics.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Hazard Identification

Objectives:
• Define hazard, risk, and related terminology.
• Explain the legal framework for HAZID in South Africa.
• Differentiate between hazard types (physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, psychosocial).
• Identify basic workplace hazards using simple checklists.

Topics:
• Introduction to HAZID and its importance.
• Key definitions: hazard, risk, risk assessment.
• South African legislative context (OHS Act, regulations).
• Categories of hazards: physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, psychosocial.
• Common workplace hazards and examples.
• Introduction to hazard identification tools (checklists, observation).

Day 2: Hazard Identification Techniques

Objectives:
• Apply systematic hazard identification techniques.
• Use job safety analysis (JSA) and what-if analysis.
• Conduct a basic hazard hunt using structured observation.
• Document identified hazards accurately.

Topics:
• Overview of HAZID methodologies: JSA, What-If, Checklist, Hazard Hunt.
• Step-by-step Job Safety Analysis (JSA).
• What-If analysis technique.
• Practical hazard hunt exercise.
• Documentation and reporting of hazards.
• Common pitfalls in hazard identification.

Day 3: Risk Assessment and Prioritisation

Objectives:
• Apply risk rating matrices to prioritise hazards.
• Determine likelihood and consequence of hazards.
• Use qualitative and semi-quantitative risk assessment methods.
• Identify control measures using the hierarchy of controls.

Topics:
• Introduction to risk assessment: likelihood and consequence.
• Risk rating matrices (5x5, 3x3).
• Qualitative risk assessment methods.
• Semi-quantitative scoring.
• Hierarchy of controls (elimination to PPE).
• Case studies on risk prioritisation.

Day 4: Advanced HAZID and Specialised Environments

Objectives:
• Apply HAZID in complex and specialised environments (e.g., chemical plants, construction).
• Use HAZOP and other team-based techniques.
• Identify emerging hazards (e.g., fatigue, psychosocial).
• Integrate HAZID with safety management systems.

Topics:
• HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study) overview.
• HAZID for process safety and major hazard installations.
• Specialised environments: confined space, working at height, electrical.
• Emerging hazards: fatigue, stress, workplace violence.
• Linking HAZID to safety management systems (SHEQ, ISO 45001).
• Case studies from mining, construction, and chemical sectors.

Day 5: Integration, Review, and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Conduct a complete HAZID process from start to finish.
• Develop a hazard register and risk control plan.
• Present findings and recommend controls.
• Review course learnings and assessment preparation.

Topics:
• Full HAZID simulation: team exercise.
• Creating a hazard register.
• Developing risk control plans.
• Communication and reporting of HAZID outcomes.
• Review of key concepts.
• Final assessment preparation.

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Learners apply theoretical knowledge through supervised hands-on hazard identification exercises in simulated and real workplace environments. Practicals reinforce systematic observation, risk rating, and control selection skills.

Practical Activities
  • Hazard Hunt Exercise — Learners conduct a structured walk-through of a simulated or actual workplace to identify hazards using checklists and observation. (4h)
  • Job Safety Analysis (JSA) Workshop — Learners break down a specific job task into steps, identify hazards for each step, and propose controls. (4h)
  • Risk Assessment and Prioritisation Exercise — Using a set of identified hazards, learners apply a risk matrix to rate risks and prioritise them for action. (4h)
  • Full HAZID Simulation — Teams conduct a complete HAZID process on a complex scenario, producing a hazard register and risk control plan. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
