This course is designed for engineers, safety professionals, operations and maintenance personnel, and anyone involved in process design, operation, or management who needs to understand and apply HAZOP techniques.

Course Outline

Practicals

Overview

The practicals provide hands-on experience in conducting HAZOP studies, from preparation to documentation. Learners will work in teams to perform HAZOP on realistic process scenarios, applying guide words and parameters, and producing reports. This reinforces the theoretical knowledge and develops facilitation and teamwork skills.

Practical Activities

• Practical 1: HAZOP Preparation and Node Selection — Learners are given a P&ID of a simple process (e.g., a heat exchanger system) and must identify nodes, define design intent, and prepare a HAZOP worksheet. (4h)
• Practical 2: Conducting a HAZOP Session — In teams, learners conduct a HAZOP on a selected node using guide words and parameters. They will brainstorm deviations, causes, consequences, and safeguards, and record findings. (6h)
• Practical 3: Risk Ranking and Report Writing — Teams use a risk matrix to rank findings from the HAZOP session, then produce a HAZOP report with recommendations and action items. (4h)
• Practical 4: Advanced HAZOP Scenario (Batch Process) — Learners apply advanced HAZOP techniques to a batch reactor process, including procedural deviations and human factors. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate
