Job Safety Analysis (JSA) Training

SAQA US AATICD-0290 | NQF 5 | Credits 10 | Duration 5 Days
From $913 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to conduct effective Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) in the workplace. It covers the systematic identification of hazards, assessment of risks, and implementation of control measures to enhance occupational health and safety. By the end of the course, participants will be able to facilitate JSA processes that contribute to a safer work environment.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply the JSA process to break down jobs into steps and identify potential hazards.
  • Analyze risks associated with each job step using appropriate risk assessment techniques.
  • Evaluate existing control measures and recommend improvements to eliminate or mitigate hazards.
  • Design a JSA document that clearly communicates hazards and controls to workers.
  • Implement JSA findings by integrating them into safe work procedures and training.
  • Demonstrate the ability to facilitate a JSA team session, ensuring participation and accuracy.

Target Audience

This course is designed for health and safety officers, team leaders, supervisors, and any personnel responsible for conducting or participating in job safety analyses. It is also suitable for those who wish to improve their understanding of hazard identification and risk assessment in the workplace.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Job Safety Analysis

Objectives:
• Define Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and its purpose in the workplace.
• Identify the legal and regulatory requirements for JSA in South Africa.
• Explain the benefits of JSA for employees and employers.
• Recognize the difference between JSA and other hazard identification tools.

Topics:
• What is a Job Safety Analysis?
• Legal framework: Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993) and regulations.
• Benefits of JSA: accident prevention, compliance, and productivity.
• The role of JSA in risk management.
• Comparison with other methods (e.g., risk assessment, HAZOP).
• Key terminology and definitions.

Day 2: Preparing for a JSA

Objectives:
• Identify jobs that require a JSA based on risk and frequency.
• Select the appropriate JSA team members.
• Gather necessary information and resources for JSA.
• Break down a job into basic steps.

Topics:
• Criteria for selecting jobs for JSA.
• Prioritization of high-risk jobs.
• Forming a JSA team: roles and responsibilities.
• Information gathering: existing procedures, incident history, and equipment manuals.
• Observing the job and breaking it down into steps.
• Common pitfalls in step breakdown.

Day 3: Conducting the Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment

Objectives:
• Identify potential hazards for each job step.
• Determine the risk level of each hazard.
• Apply risk assessment matrices.
• Document hazards and risks accurately.

Topics:
• Hazard types: physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, and psychosocial.
• Hazard identification techniques: observation, questioning, and checklists.
• Risk assessment matrix: likelihood and severity.
• Risk scoring and prioritization.
• Involving workers in hazard identification.
• Documentation formats for JSA.

Day 4: Developing and Implementing Controls

Objectives:
• Select appropriate hazard controls using the hierarchy of controls.
• Develop safe work procedures and controls for each step.
• Communicate JSA findings to workers.
• Implement JSA in the workplace.

Topics:
• Hierarchy of controls: elimination, substitution, engineering, administrative, PPE.
• Developing specific control measures for identified hazards.
• Writing clear and actionable safe work procedures.
• Training workers on JSA results.
• Integrating JSA into daily work routines.
• Reviewing and updating JSA as needed.

Day 5: Advanced Applications and Continuous Improvement

Objectives:
• Apply JSA to complex and multi-step jobs.
• Analyze incident data to improve JSA.
• Implement a system for regular JSA review and update.
• Facilitate JSA training for other workers.

Topics:
• Case studies of JSA in various industries.
• Integrating JSA with other safety management systems.
• Using JSA for incident investigation and prevention.
• Continuous improvement: monitoring and review.
• Coaching and mentoring others in JSA.
• Final assessment and course wrap-up.

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

The practicals are essential for learners to apply JSA concepts in real-world scenarios. Through hands-on exercises, learners will practice conducting job observations, hazard identification, risk assessment, and developing controls, ensuring they can effectively implement JSA in their own workplaces.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Job Selection and Step Breakdown — In groups, learners select a job from a provided list and observe it being performed (video or live demonstration). They break the job down into basic steps. (3h)
  • Practical 2: Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment — Using the job steps from Practical 1, learners identify potential hazards for each step and conduct a risk assessment using a provided matrix. (4h)
  • Practical 3: Developing Controls and Safe Work Procedures — Learners develop control measures for each hazard using the hierarchy of controls and write a safe work procedure for the job. (4h)
  • Practical 4: JSA Communication and Implementation — Learners present their JSA to the class and conduct a mock toolbox talk to communicate the JSA to workers. They also discuss how to integrate the JSA into daily work routines. (3h)
  • Practical 5: JSA Review and Improvement — Learners review a given JSA that contains errors or outdated information, identify gaps, and update it accordingly. They also practice using incident data to improve JSA. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
