Description

This course equips learners with the skills to strategically align human capital with organisational goals. Participants will learn to forecast workforce needs, analyse talent gaps, and develop actionable plans for recruitment, retention, and succession. The focus is on practical application within the South African business context.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, a basic understanding of HR concepts is beneficial.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Human Capital Planning

Objectives:
• Define human capital planning and its strategic importance.
• Identify the key components of a human capital plan.
• Explain the relationship between organisational strategy and human capital planning.
• Describe the role of HR metrics in workforce planning.
• Outline the legal and ethical framework for human capital planning in South Africa.

• Overview of HR metrics and analytics.
• Legal and ethical considerations: Employment Equity Act, Skills Development Act.

Day 2: Workforce Demand and Supply Analysis

Objectives:
• Conduct a workforce demand analysis using quantitative and qualitative methods.
• Perform a workforce supply analysis, including demographic trends.
• Identify gaps and surpluses in the current workforce.
• Apply forecasting techniques to predict future workforce needs.
• Use data sources such as labour market information and internal HR data.

• Analysing internal workforce supply: skills inventories, succession planning.

Day 3: Talent Acquisition and Retention Strategies

• Measure ROI of talent management initiatives.

Day 4: Skills Development and Performance Management

Objectives:
• Design a skills development plan aligned with the Skills Development Act.
• Implement performance management systems that support human capital goals.
• Use competency frameworks to identify skill gaps.
• Link training and development to business outcomes.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of learning interventions.

• Skills gap analysis and competency modelling.
• Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) and Annual Training Report (ATR).
• Performance management: goal setting, feedback, and appraisal.
• Learning and development: methods, budgeting, and ROI.
• Coaching and mentoring programmes.

• Case study: Implementing a skills programme in a SA company.

Day 5: Integrating and Evaluating Human Capital Planning

Objectives:
• Integrate all components into a comprehensive human capital plan.
• Use balanced scorecards and dashboards to monitor human capital metrics.
• Evaluate the impact of human capital planning on organisational performance.
• Present a human capital plan to stakeholders.
• Adapt plans in response to changing business environments.

• Building an integrated human capital plan.
• Human capital reporting: dashboards and scorecards.
• Evaluating plan effectiveness: KPIs and benchmarks.
• Change management and communication strategies.
• Future trends: digital HR, gig economy, remote work.
• Practical exercise: Presenting a human capital plan.
• Final assessment: Case study presentation and feedback.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.

  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
