Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to perform instrumentation calibration in industrial and laboratory settings. Participants will understand calibration principles, procedures, and standards to ensure measurement accuracy and compliance with quality systems.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Instrumentation and Calibration Principles

Objectives:
• Understand the role of instrumentation in process control
• Define calibration and its importance in industry
• Identify key terminology and units of measurement
• Recognize the hierarchy of standards and traceability

Topics:
• Overview of instrumentation in industrial processes
• What is calibration? Purpose and benefits
• Key terms: accuracy, precision, resolution, range, span
• Units of measurement and SI system
• Traceability chain and national/international standards
• Calibration intervals and factors affecting frequency
• Safety precautions in calibration activities

Day 2: Calibration Standards and Measurement Uncertainty

Objectives:
• Distinguish between different types of calibration standards
• Explain measurement uncertainty and its components
• Perform basic uncertainty calculations
• Understand the role of reference standards and calibration certificates

Topics:
• Types of standards: primary, secondary, working, reference
• Calibration certificates and their interpretation
• Introduction to measurement uncertainty
• Sources of uncertainty: random and systematic errors
• Calculating combined and expanded uncertainty
• Uncertainty budgets and reporting
• Practical examples of uncertainty analysis

Day 3: Calibration of Pressure and Temperature Instruments

Objectives:
• Calibrate pressure gauges and transmitters using a deadweight tester
• Calibrate temperature sensors (RTDs and thermocouples) using a dry-block calibrator
• Apply correction factors and document results
• Understand calibration procedures and standards (e.g., ISO 17025)

• Pressure calibration principles: gauge, absolute, differential
• Deadweight tester operation and calculations
• Temperature calibration: RTDs, thermocouples, thermistors
• Dry-block and bath calibrators
• Calibration procedures step-by-step
• Recording data and calculating deviations
• Introduction to ISO 17025 requirements

Day 4: Calibration of Flow and Level Instruments

Objectives:
• Calibrate flow meters using volumetric and gravimetric methods
• Calibrate level transmitters using wet and dry leg methods
• Apply correction factors for temperature and pressure
• Use calibration software and data loggers

Topics:
• Flow measurement principles: differential pressure, magnetic, ultrasonic
• Calibration methods: volumetric, gravimetric, master meter
• Level measurement: hydrostatic, radar, ultrasonic
• Wet leg and dry leg calibration for differential pressure transmitters
• Temperature and pressure compensation
• Calibration software tools
• Troubleshooting common calibration issues

Day 5: Advanced Calibration, Documentation, and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Calibrate analytical instruments (pH, conductivity)
• Perform loop calibration and verify system performance
• Complete calibration certificates and maintenance records
• Develop a calibration schedule and manage calibration programs

Topics:
• Calibration of analytical instruments: pH meters, conductivity meters
• Loop calibration: transmitter to controller
• Smart transmitter configuration and calibration
• Calibration management software and databases
• Creating calibration certificates and reports
• Calibration scheduling and asset management
• Review of course and assessment preparation

Overview

Practical sessions are integral to this course, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world calibration tasks. Learners will gain hands-on experience with calibration equipment, standards, and documentation procedures, ensuring they can perform calibrations competently and safely.

Practical Activities
  • Pressure Calibration Using Deadweight Tester — Learners calibrate a pressure gauge and a pressure transmitter using a deadweight tester, recording readings and calculating deviations. (4h)
  • Temperature Calibration Using Dry-Block Calibrator — Learners calibrate an RTD and a thermocouple using a dry-block calibrator, comparing readings to reference values. (4h)
  • Flow Meter Calibration Using Volumetric Method — Learners calibrate a flow meter by collecting fluid over a timed interval and comparing indicated flow to calculated flow. (4h)
  • Level Transmitter Calibration Using Wet Leg Method — Learners calibrate a differential pressure level transmitter by applying known pressures representing level changes. (4h)
  • Loop Calibration and Documentation — Learners perform a loop calibration from transmitter to DCS, verify signal integrity, and complete a calibration certificate. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
