Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to design, implement, and maintain power and automation systems in industrial and commercial environments. Participants will gain hands-on experience with control systems, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and power distribution technologies to optimize operational efficiency and safety.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, a basic understanding of electrical principles is recommended.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Electrical Power

Objectives:
• Explain basic electrical concepts including voltage, current, resistance, and power.
• Interpret single-line diagrams and electrical symbols.
• Identify common power system components and their functions.
• Apply Ohm's and Kirchhoff's laws to simple circuits.

• Introduction to electrical power systems
• Basic electrical quantities and units
• Ohm's law and Kirchhoff's laws
• Electrical diagrams and symbols
• Overview of power generation, transmission, and distribution
• Safety principles in power systems

Day 2: Power Distribution and Protection

Objectives:
• Describe the components of low-voltage distribution systems.
• Explain the principles of overcurrent and earth fault protection.
• Select appropriate protective devices for given applications.
• Interpret protection coordination curves.

Topics:
• Low-voltage switchgear and distribution boards
• Circuit breakers, fuses, and relays
• Overcurrent and earth fault protection principles
• Protection coordination and selectivity
• Cable sizing and voltage drop considerations
• Earthing systems and bonding

Day 3: Introduction to Automation and Control

Objectives:
• Differentiate between manual, semi-automatic, and automatic control systems.
• Identify common sensors and actuators used in automation.
• Explain the function of programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
• Develop simple ladder logic programs.

Topics:
• Automation fundamentals and control hierarchies
• Sensors: proximity, temperature, pressure, flow
• Actuators: motors, solenoids, valves
• Introduction to PLCs: architecture and operation
• Basic ladder logic programming
• Human-machine interfaces (HMIs) basics

Day 4: Motor Control and Variable Speed Drives

Objectives:
• Describe different types of electric motors and their starting methods.
• Explain the operation of variable speed drives (VSDs).
• Design basic motor control circuits.
• Troubleshoot common motor and drive faults.

Topics:
• AC and DC motors: characteristics and applications
• Motor starting methods: DOL, star-delta, soft starters
• Variable speed drives: principles and configurations
• Motor control circuits: contactors, overloads, interlocks
• Drive parameter setting and commissioning
• Motor and drive fault diagnosis

Day 5: Integrated Power and Automation Systems

Objectives:
• Integrate power distribution and automation components into a cohesive system.
• Apply SCADA concepts for remote monitoring and control.
• Perform system testing and commissioning procedures.
• Implement energy efficiency measures in automated systems.

Topics:
• SCADA systems: architecture and communication protocols
• Integration of PLCs with power distribution
• System testing, commissioning, and documentation
• Energy management and power quality improvement
• Case studies: industrial automation projects
• Course review and assessment

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practical sessions reinforce theoretical concepts by allowing learners to work with real power and automation components. Learners will wire circuits, program PLCs, configure drives, and troubleshoot integrated systems in a supervised lab environment.

Practical Activities
  • Electrical Measurements and Circuit Wiring — Learners use multimeters to measure voltage, current, and resistance, then wire simple series and parallel circuits on a training board. (4h)
  • Distribution Board and Protection Device Setup — Learners assemble a low-voltage distribution board, install circuit breakers and earth leakage units, and test protection settings. (4h)
  • PLC Programming and HMI Integration — Learners write ladder logic programs for a simple conveyor control system and create a basic HMI interface. (4h)
  • Motor Control and VSD Commissioning — Learners wire a motor control circuit with a contactor and overload, then commission a variable speed drive to control motor speed. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
