Description

This course develops foundational leadership competencies essential for managing teams and driving organisational performance. Participants will learn to apply leadership theories, foster collaborative work environments, and make ethical decisions that align with South African business contexts.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Leadership

Objectives:
• Define leadership and differentiate it from management
• Identify key leadership theories and styles
• Understand the role of self-awareness in leadership
• Recognise the importance of emotional intelligence
• Explore the ethical responsibilities of a leader

• Introduction to leadership concepts
• Leadership vs management
• Overview of leadership theories (trait, behavioural, contingency)
• Self-assessment and self-awareness tools
• Emotional intelligence fundamentals
• Ethics and integrity in leadership
• Group discussion: Qualities of effective leaders

Day 2: Communication and Team Dynamics

Objectives:
• Apply effective communication techniques as a leader
• Understand team development stages
• Foster collaboration and manage conflict
• Practice active listening and feedback skills
• Build trust within teams

Topics:
• Communication models and barriers
• Active listening and assertive communication
• Giving and receiving constructive feedback
• Team development stages (Tuckman's model)
• Conflict resolution strategies
• Building trust and psychological safety
• Role-play: Handling difficult conversations

Day 3: Leading and Motivating Teams

Objectives:
• Apply motivational theories to enhance team performance
• Delegate tasks effectively
• Coach and develop team members
• Set SMART goals and align them with organisational vision
• Recognise and reward contributions appropriately

• Motivation theories (Maslow, Herzberg, Expectancy)
• Delegation principles and techniques
• Coaching and mentoring for growth
• Goal setting and performance management
• Recognition and reward systems
• Case study: Motivating a disengaged team

Day 4: Strategic Thinking and Decision Making

Objectives:
• Develop strategic thinking skills
• Apply decision-making models to complex situations
• Analyse problems and generate creative solutions
• Manage change and lead transitions
• Understand systems thinking

Topics:
• Strategic thinking vs operational thinking
• Decision-making models (rational, intuitive, collaborative)
• Problem-solving techniques (root cause analysis, brainstorming)
• Change management principles (Kotter's 8 steps)
• Systems thinking and organisational impact
• Simulation: Strategic decision-making scenario

Day 5: Leadership in Practice and Personal Development

Objectives:
• Create a personal leadership development plan
• Apply leadership skills in a simulated environment
• Demonstrate effective team leadership
• Evaluate leadership effectiveness through feedback
• Commit to continuous improvement

Topics:
• Leadership styles in action (situational leadership)
• Building a personal leadership brand
• Creating a leadership development plan
• Peer coaching and feedback circles
• Presentation: Leadership lessons learned
• Course wrap-up and action planning

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

The practicals component provides learners with opportunities to apply leadership theories and skills in realistic scenarios. Through role-plays, simulations, and group exercises, learners practise communication, conflict resolution, decision-making, and team facilitation, receiving feedback to refine their leadership approach.

Practical Activities
  • Communication and Conflict Role-Play — Learners engage in structured role-plays simulating difficult conversations, such as giving constructive feedback or resolving team conflict. (4h)
  • Team Facilitation Simulation — Learners lead a small team through a problem-solving task, applying delegation, motivation, and coaching techniques. (4h)
  • Strategic Decision-Making Simulation — In groups, learners analyse a complex business scenario and make strategic decisions, considering change management and systems thinking. (4h)
  • Leadership Development Plan Presentation — Learners present their personal leadership development plan and receive peer and facilitator feedback. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
