Description

This course equips learners with the competencies to manage construction projects effectively, from initiation to close-out. It covers project planning, resource allocation, risk management, and quality control within the South African construction context. Learners will gain practical skills to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to specified standards.

Target Audience

This course is designed for construction supervisors, site managers, project coordinators, and aspiring construction project managers who seek to formalise their project management skills. It is also suitable for professionals transitioning into construction project management roles.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, learners should have basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Construction Project Management

Objectives:
• Understand the role and responsibilities of a construction project manager
• Identify the key phases of the construction project lifecycle
• Explain the importance of project management in the construction industry
• Recognize relevant legislation and standards in South Africa
• Apply basic project management principles to a simple scenario

Topics:
• Definition and scope of construction project management
• Project lifecycle: initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, closure
• Key stakeholders and their roles
• Overview of the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) and SAQA
• Introduction to project management frameworks (PMBOK, PRINCE2)
• Ethical and professional conduct in construction

Day 2: Project Planning and Scheduling

Objectives:
• Develop a project scope statement and work breakdown structure (WBS)
• Create a project schedule using Gantt charts and network diagrams
• Estimate resources, time, and costs for construction activities
• Identify critical path and float in a schedule
• Apply planning techniques to a sample construction project

Topics:
• Scope definition and WBS creation
• Activity sequencing and dependencies
• Estimating techniques (parametric, analogous, bottom-up)
• Scheduling tools: Gantt charts, CPM, PERT
• Resource allocation and levelling
• Cost estimation and budgeting basics
• Risk identification and planning

Day 3: Resource Management and Procurement

Objectives:
• Manage human resources effectively on a construction site
• Understand procurement processes and contract types
• Plan for material, equipment, and labour requirements
• Implement quality management principles
• Monitor resource usage and control costs

Topics:
• Human resource management: roles, responsibilities, teams
• Procurement lifecycle: tendering, evaluation, award
• Contract types: fixed-price, cost-reimbursable, time and materials
• Material management: ordering, storage, handling
• Equipment selection and maintenance
• Quality management: plans, inspections, corrective actions
• Cost control techniques: earned value management

Day 4: Risk, Health, Safety, and Environmental Management

Objectives:
• Identify common construction risks and apply mitigation strategies
• Comply with OHS Act and environmental regulations
• Develop a risk management plan and a health and safety plan
• Conduct a risk assessment and incident investigation
• Promote a safety culture on site

Topics:
• Risk management process: identification, analysis, response
• OHS Act requirements: duties, penalties, compliance
• Environmental management: waste, pollution, biodiversity
• Safety plans, permits, and toolbox talks
• Incident reporting and investigation
• Emergency preparedness and response
• Environmental impact assessments (EIA)

Day 5: Project Monitoring, Control, and Close-out

Objectives:
• Monitor project progress using performance indicators
• Manage changes, variations, and claims
• Conduct project handover and close-out procedures
• Evaluate project success and lessons learned
• Integrate all knowledge areas in a capstone exercise

Topics:
• Performance measurement: schedule variance, cost variance
• Change management: variation orders, change control boards
• Claims and dispute resolution
• Quality control and assurance during construction
• Handover process: documentation, snag lists, commissioning
• Project close-out: financial closure, final reports
• Lessons learned and continuous improvement
• Capstone project: real-world scenario simulation

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.

  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
