Water Sampling and Monitoring Training

SAQA US AATICD-0208 | NQF 5 | Credits 10 | Duration 5 Days
From $1,242 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the skills to collect, handle, and preserve water samples from various sources for chemical, microbiological, and physical analysis. It covers sampling techniques, chain of custody, and quality assurance to ensure compliance with SANS 241 and other regulatory standards.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply correct sampling techniques for different water sources (surface, groundwater, treated supply
  • Implement chain of custody procedures and complete sampling documentation accurately
  • Analyze sample preservation and transport requirements to maintain sample integrity
  • Evaluate sampling equipment and select appropriate containers and preservatives
  • Demonstrate aseptic technique for microbiological sampling
  • Interpret sampling plans and adjust based on site conditions and monitoring objectives

Target Audience

Water quality technicians, environmental health practitioners, and laboratory sampling personnel responsible for routine water monitoring in municipal, industrial, or environmental settings.

Prerequisites

Basic understanding of water quality parameters and familiarity with laboratory terminology.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Water Sampling and Monitoring

Objectives:
• Understand the importance of water quality monitoring
• Identify different water sources and their characteristics
• Explain the principles of representative sampling
• Recognise relevant legislation and standards in South Africa

Topics:

• Types of water sources: surface water, groundwater, wastewater
• Basic water quality parameters: physical, chemical, biological
• Introduction to South African water quality guidelines and legislation (e.g., SANS 241, National Water Act)
• Health and safety considerations for sampling

Day 2: Sampling Techniques and Equipment

Objectives:
• Describe various sampling methods for different water types
• Select appropriate sampling equipment
• Demonstrate proper sample collection procedures
• Apply aseptic techniques for microbiological sampling

Topics:
• Sampling strategies: grab, composite, depth-integrated
• Equipment for sampling: bottles, pumps, bailers, samplers
• Sample collection protocols for surface water, groundwater, and wastewater

• Sample labelling and packaging
• Quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) in sampling

Day 4: Field Testing and In-Situ Monitoring

Objectives:
• Calibrate and operate field testing instruments
• Conduct in-situ measurements accurately
• Interpret field test results
• Troubleshoot common equipment issues

Topics:
• Calibration of field meters (pH, EC, DO, turbidity)
• In-situ monitoring techniques
• Use of multi-parameter probes and data loggers
• Field test kits for chemical parameters
• Data recording and verification

Day 5: Data Management, Reporting, and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Compile and interpret water quality data
• Prepare a basic monitoring report
• Identify common sampling errors and corrective actions
• Integrate practical skills through a simulated monitoring exercise

Topics:
• Data handling and statistical basics
• Reporting formats and compliance requirements
• Common pitfalls in sampling and how to avoid them
• Review of practical sessions and feedback
• Final assessment and course wrap-up

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are integral to this course, allowing learners to apply sampling techniques, use field equipment, and handle samples correctly. These exercises reinforce theoretical knowledge and build competence in real-world water monitoring scenarios.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Water Sampling Techniques — Learners practice grab and composite sampling at a simulated water source, using various equipment such as bailers and depth samplers. (4h)
  • Practical 2: Field Measurements and Equipment Calibration — Learners calibrate and operate portable meters (pH, EC, DO, turbidity) and conduct in-situ measurements at multiple stations. (4h)
  • Practical 3: Sample Preservation and Chain of Custody — Learners practice preserving samples for different parameters, completing chain of custody forms, and packaging samples for transport. (4h)
  • Practical 4: Integrated Monitoring Exercise — Learners conduct a full simulated monitoring event: from site assessment and sampling to field testing, preservation, and data recording. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
