Description

This course equips learners with the fundamental knowledge and practical skills required to operate water treatment plants effectively and safely. Participants will gain an understanding of water quality standards, treatment processes, and regulatory compliance, enabling them to contribute to the provision of clean, safe water.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Water Treatment and Water Quality

Objectives:
• Understand the importance of water treatment in the South African context
• Identify key water quality parameters and their significance
• Explain the stages of the water treatment process
• Describe the role of a water treatment operator
• Recognize relevant legislation and standards (SANS 241)

Topics:
• Overview of water treatment and its importance
• Water sources and characteristics
• Key water quality parameters (turbidity, pH, chlorine residual, etc.)
• Introduction to the water treatment process flow
• Overview of SANS 241 drinking water quality standards
• Roles and responsibilities of a water treatment operator
• Health, safety, and environmental considerations

Day 2: Coagulation, Flocculation, and Sedimentation

Objectives:
• Explain the principles of coagulation and flocculation
• Describe the sedimentation process and its role in water treatment
• Identify chemicals used in coagulation and flocculation
• Perform jar tests to determine optimal chemical dosages
• Monitor and adjust process parameters for effective solids removal

• Principles of coagulation and flocculation
• Common coagulants (alum, ferric chloride, polymers)
• Jar testing procedure and interpretation
• Sedimentation theory and tank design
• Factors affecting sedimentation efficiency
• Sludge handling and disposal
• Operational monitoring and troubleshooting

Day 3: Filtration and Disinfection

Objectives:
• Differentiate between rapid gravity filtration and slow sand filtration
• Explain the disinfection process and factors affecting efficacy
• Operate and maintain filtration systems
• Monitor disinfection residuals and adjust dosing
• Understand chlorination by-products and control measures

Topics:
• Types of filters (rapid gravity, slow sand, pressure filters)
• Filter media and backwashing procedures
• Filtration performance monitoring
• Disinfection methods (chlorine, UV, ozone)
• Chlorine chemistry and dosing calculations
• CT concept and disinfection validation
• By-product formation and minimization

Day 4: Advanced Treatment Processes and Plant Operations

Objectives:
• Describe advanced treatment processes (membrane filtration, activated carbon, ion exchange)
• Operate and maintain membrane systems (MF/UF/RO)
• Manage chemical dosing and storage safely
• Interpret process control data and make operational adjustments
• Perform routine plant inspections and record keeping

Topics:
• Membrane filtration principles (MF, UF, NF, RO)
• Membrane operation and cleaning
• Activated carbon adsorption
• Ion exchange for softening and nitrate removal
• Chemical handling and safety
• Process control parameters and instrumentation
• Data recording, reporting, and compliance

Day 5: Troubleshooting, Maintenance, and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Identify common operational problems and their causes
• Implement corrective actions for process upsets
• Plan preventive maintenance tasks
• Conduct on-site practical assessments
• Apply integrated knowledge to a simulated plant scenario

Topics:
• Common operational problems (high turbidity, low chlorine residual, filter breakthrough)
• Troubleshooting methodologies
• Preventive maintenance schedules
• Emergency response procedures
• Practical assessment: plant walk-through and problem-solving
• Course review and final assessment

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

The practicals provide hands-on experience in key water treatment operations, including jar testing, filter backwashing, chlorine residual testing, and membrane operation. Learners will apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, developing skills in process control, troubleshooting, and equipment maintenance.

Practical Activities
  • Jar Test and Coagulation Optimization — Learners perform jar tests on raw water samples to determine optimal coagulant dose and pH, and observe floc formation. (4h)
  • Filter Operation and Backwashing — Learners operate a pilot-scale rapid gravity filter, monitor headloss and effluent turbidity, and perform a backwash cycle. (4h)
  • Chlorine Dosing and Residual Testing — Learners prepare chlorine solutions, dose water samples, and measure free and total chlorine residuals using DPD methods. (4h)
  • Membrane Filtration System Operation — Learners operate a small-scale membrane filtration unit, monitor transmembrane pressure and flux, and perform a clean-in-place (CIP) procedure. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
