This course equips participants with the knowledge and skills to develop and implement assessment and education standards within the South African qualifications framework. It covers the principles of standards setting, outcomes-based assessment, and quality assurance, enabling learners to design effective assessment strategies and education standards that align with industry and regulatory requirements.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Assessment and Education Standards

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and principles of assessment in education.
• Define education standards and their role in quality assurance.
• Identify key legislation and frameworks governing assessment in South Africa.
• Differentiate between formative, summative, and diagnostic assessments.
• Explore the relationship between standards and learning outcomes.

• Introduction to assessment concepts and terminology.
• Overview of SAQA and the NQF framework.
• Principles of good assessment: validity, reliability, fairness, and practicability.
• Types of assessments and their purposes.
• Education standards: definitions, types, and sources.
• Linking standards to curriculum and learning outcomes.
• Introduction to assessment policies in South Africa.
• Case studies: examples of standards in different education sectors.

Day 2: Designing Assessment Tools and Aligning with Standards

Objectives:
• Design assessment activities that align with specified standards.
• Develop clear assessment criteria and rubrics.
• Apply Bloom's taxonomy to set appropriate cognitive levels.
• Ensure assessment tools are valid and reliable.
• Plan for inclusive assessment practices.

• Steps in designing assessment tools.
• Writing learning outcomes and performance indicators.
• Using Bloom's taxonomy and other taxonomies.
• Developing rubrics and marking guidelines.
• Aligning assessments with unit standards and qualifications.

Day 3: Assessment Moderation and Quality Assurance

Objectives:
• Explain the purpose and process of moderation.
• Distinguish between internal and external moderation.
• Apply moderation principles to ensure consistency and fairness.
• Develop moderation plans and reports.
• Identify common issues in assessment and moderation.

• What is moderation? Internal vs external moderation.
• Moderation principles: consistency, fairness, transparency.
• The moderation cycle: planning, implementation, feedback.
• Roles and responsibilities of moderators.
• Developing moderation instruments and checklists.
• Analysing moderation results and taking corrective action.
• Case studies: moderation challenges and solutions.
• Practical exercise: moderate a sample assessment.

Day 4: Developing and Reviewing Education Standards

Objectives:
• Describe the process of developing education standards.
• Identify stakeholders and their roles in standards development.
• Apply criteria for writing clear and measurable standards.
• Review and evaluate existing standards for relevance and quality.
• Understand the role of standards in curriculum development.

Topics:
• Overview of standards development processes.
• Stakeholder engagement and consultation.
• Writing clear, measurable, and achievable standards.
• Criteria for good standards: specificity, coherence, progression.
• Reviewing standards: methods and criteria.
• Updating standards to reflect industry and societal needs.
• Linking standards to qualifications and curricula.
• Practical exercise: draft a set of standards for a topic.

Day 5: Integration, Assessment Planning, and Implementation

Objectives:
• Develop a comprehensive assessment plan for a programme.
• Integrate assessment and standards development into a cohesive system.
• Manage assessment records and reporting.
• Address ethical considerations in assessment.
• Prepare for assessment implementation and continuous improvement.

Topics:
• Creating an assessment strategy and plan.
• Aligning assessment plans with organisational goals.
• Record keeping and data management for assessments.
• Ethical issues: confidentiality, bias, and fairness.
• Continuous improvement: using assessment data to enhance standards.
• Implementation challenges and solutions.
• Final project: present an assessment plan for a course.
• Course review and action planning.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
