Description

This course equips education and training providers with the competencies to design, implement, and manage effective learning management systems. Participants will learn to align learning strategies with organisational goals, ensure compliance with SAQA requirements, and enhance learner outcomes through systematic planning and evaluation.

This course is designed for training managers, education coordinators, learning and development practitioners, and anyone responsible for managing learning programmes within public or private training providers in South Africa.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Learning Management Systems

Objectives:
• Define learning management systems and their role in education and training.
• Identify key stakeholders and their responsibilities in LMS implementation.
• Explain the benefits of using an LMS for educational providers.
• Outline the regulatory framework for learning management in South Africa.

• What is a Learning Management System?
• History and evolution of LMS.
• Stakeholders in learning management: learners, educators, administrators, providers.
• Benefits of LMS: accessibility, tracking, reporting.
• SAQA and NQF context for learning management.
• Overview of unit standard 116811.

Day 2: LMS Features and Functionality

Objectives:
• Describe core features of an LMS: course creation, user management, assessment tools.
• Compare different types of LMS (cloud-based vs. on-premise, open-source vs. proprietary).
• Explain how to manage user roles and permissions.
• Identify key reporting and analytics capabilities.

Topics:
• Core LMS features: content delivery, assessments, communication tools.
• Types of LMS: Moodle, Blackboard, Canvas, etc.
• User roles: admin, instructor, learner, guest.
• Setting up courses and learning paths.
• Assessment tools: quizzes, assignments, rubrics.
• Reporting: learner progress, completion rates, grades.

Day 3: Designing and Developing Online Courses

Objectives:
• Apply instructional design principles to create online courses.
• Develop learning objectives aligned with Bloom's taxonomy.
• Create engaging multimedia content for diverse learners.
• Structure courses for effective navigation and user experience.

• Instructional design models: ADDIE, SAM.
• Writing measurable learning outcomes.
• Content creation: video, audio, documents, interactive elements.
• Course structure: modules, lessons, activities.
• Accessibility considerations: WCAG guidelines.
• Using authoring tools: Articulate, Captivate.

Day 4: Assessment and Evaluation Strategies

Objectives:
• Design formative and summative assessments within an LMS.
• Implement rubrics and grading criteria.
• Use analytics to evaluate learner performance.
• Ensure assessment integrity and prevent cheating.

• Types of assessments: quizzes, assignments, discussions, portfolios.
• Creating rubrics in the LMS.
• Automated grading vs. manual grading.
• Plagiarism detection tools.
• Using LMS analytics for continuous improvement.
• Feedback mechanisms for learners.

Day 5: Administration and System Management

Objectives:
• Manage user data and enrollment processes.
• Configure system settings and customize the LMS interface.
• Implement backup and security protocols.
• Troubleshoot common technical issues.

• User enrollment: batch uploads, self-registration, cohorts.
• Customizing LMS appearance: themes, logos, menus.
• System settings: language, timezone, notifications.
• Data management: backups, archiving, GDPR/POPIA compliance.
• Security: user authentication, data encryption.
• Troubleshooting: common errors, support resources.

Day 6: Integration and Interoperability

Objectives:
• Explain the importance of interoperability standards (SCORM, xAPI, LTI).
• Integrate LMS with other systems: HRIS, student information systems.
• Use APIs to extend LMS functionality.
• Manage third-party plugins and integrations.

Topics:
• Interoperability standards: SCORM, xAPI, LTI.
• Integrating with SIS: automatic enrollment, grade sync.
• Using APIs: REST, SOAP.
• Plugins and extensions: adding features.
• Single sign-on (SSO) integration.
• Case studies: successful integrations in South African institutions.

Day 7: Implementation Planning and Best Practices

Objectives:
• Develop an LMS implementation plan for an educational provider.
• Apply change management strategies for stakeholder adoption.
• Evaluate LMS effectiveness using key performance indicators.
• Create a roadmap for ongoing improvement and support.

Topics:
• Implementation phases: needs analysis, pilot, rollout.
• Change management: communication, training, support.
• Training staff and learners on LMS usage.
• Measuring success: KPIs, user satisfaction surveys.
• Continuous improvement: updates, feedback loops.
• Legal and ethical considerations: copyright, data privacy.
• Final project: present an implementation plan.

Practicals

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.

  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
