This course equips learners with the skills to mobilise communities around specific issues, fostering collective action and sustainable change. Participants will learn to identify community needs, develop engagement strategies, and facilitate participatory processes to address local challenges effectively.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Community Mobilisation and the South African Context

Objectives:
• Understand the concept of community mobilisation and its importance in South Africa.
• Identify key principles of community engagement and participation.
• Recognise the role of community-based organisations and stakeholders.
• Analyse the socio-political landscape affecting community issues.

• Definition and scope of community mobilisation.
• Historical context: community organising in South Africa.
• Principles of participation, empowerment, and ownership.
• Stakeholder mapping: identifying key role players.
• Ethical considerations in community work.
• Overview of relevant legislation and SAQA unit standards.

Day 2: Understanding Specific Issues and Community Needs Assessment

Objectives:
• Define specific community issues and their root causes.
• Conduct a basic community needs assessment.
• Use participatory tools to gather community input.
• Analyse data to prioritise issues.

Topics:
• Types of community issues (social, economic, environmental).
• Root cause analysis techniques.
• Participatory rural appraisal (PRA) tools.
• Conducting surveys, focus groups, and interviews.
• Data analysis and prioritisation methods.
• Case studies of community needs assessments.

Day 3: Building Relationships and Forming Community Action Groups

Objectives:
• Develop strategies for building trust and rapport with community members.
• Identify and recruit potential leaders and volunteers.
• Form and structure community action groups.
• Establish group norms and decision-making processes.

• Effective communication and active listening skills.
• Identifying and nurturing community champions.
• Group formation stages: forming, storming, norming, performing.

Day 4: Planning and Designing Community Mobilisation Strategies

• Set SMART objectives and identify resources.
• Design awareness campaigns and advocacy initiatives.
• Integrate monitoring and evaluation into the plan.

• Strategic planning frameworks (e.g., logic model).
• Setting SMART goals and objectives.
• Resource mapping and budgeting.
• Designing awareness campaigns: messaging and channels.
• Advocacy strategies: lobbying, petitions, media engagement.
• Monitoring and evaluation indicators.

Day 5: Implementing Mobilisation Activities and Engaging Stakeholders

Objectives:
• Execute planned activities effectively.
• Engage with diverse stakeholders including government and private sector.
• Manage logistics and volunteer coordination.
• Adapt strategies based on real-time feedback.

• Project management basics for mobilisation.
• Stakeholder engagement techniques.
• Volunteer management and motivation.
• Event planning: workshops, rallies, meetings.
• Dealing with resistance and opposition.
• Adaptive management: making adjustments on the go.

Day 6: Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning

• Monitor progress against objectives.
• Evaluate the impact of mobilisation efforts.
• Collect and analyse feedback for learning.
• Use findings to improve future initiatives.

• Data collection methods for evaluation.

Day 7: Sustaining Momentum and Integration of Learning

Objectives:
• Develop strategies for long-term sustainability.

• Create a sustainability plan for the community initiative.
• Reflect on personal learning and future applications.

• Sustainability principles: financial, social, institutional.
• Building partnerships and coalitions.
• Fundraising and resource mobilisation.

• Integration of unit standard outcomes.

Practicals

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
