Day 1: Foundations of RPL and Unit Standard 116587

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and principles of RPL within the SAQA framework.
• Explain the scope and requirements of Unit Standard 116587.
• Identify the roles and responsibilities of RPL practitioners.
• Recognise the legislative and policy context for RPL in South Africa.

• Introduction to RPL: definitions, benefits, and challenges.
• Overview of SAQA, NQF, and the National Qualifications Framework Act.
• Detailed breakdown of Unit Standard 116587.
• Ethical considerations and confidentiality in RPL.
• Stakeholders in RPL: candidates, assessors, moderators, and institutions.

Day 2: The RPL Process and Candidate Support

Objectives:
• Describe the stages of the RPL process from pre-assessment to certification.
• Develop strategies for candidate information sessions and support.
• Identify suitable candidates for RPL and manage expectations.
• Create a supportive environment for diverse learners.

Day 3: Evidence Collection and Portfolio Development

Day 4: Assessment Design and Methods for RPL

• Develop assessment instruments and rubrics.

• Principles of assessment in an RPL context.

• Designing flexible assessments to accommodate different learning styles.

• Adapting assessments for candidates with special needs.

Day 5: Assessment Practice and Feedback

• Conduct RPL assessments using appropriate techniques.
• Provide constructive feedback to candidates.
• Record assessment decisions and outcomes.
• Address gaps in evidence through supplementary assessment.

• Facilitating assessment sessions: setting the scene, time management.
• Questioning techniques for probing prior learning.
• Observing demonstrations and evaluating performance.
• Giving feedback: positive reinforcement and developmental areas.

Day 6: Moderation and Quality Assurance in RPL

• Understand the role of internal and external moderation in RPL.
• Prepare moderation evidence and reports.
• Apply moderation criteria to ensure consistency and fairness.
• Address moderation feedback and improve practice.

• Moderation requirements per SAQA and ETQA.
• Internal moderation processes: peer review, sampling.
• External moderation and verification by awarding bodies.
• Preparing a moderation file: evidence of assessment decisions.

Day 7: Implementation Strategies and Professional Practice

• Develop an RPL implementation plan for an organisation.
• Identify resources and support systems needed for successful RPL.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of RPL programmes.
• Reflect on ethical dilemmas and professional development needs.

• Building an institutional RPL policy and procedure.
• Resource requirements: staff, materials, budget.
• Marketing RPL to potential candidates and stakeholders.
• Monitoring and evaluating RPL programme outcomes.
• Ethical dilemmas: conflicts of interest, objectivity.
• Professional development pathways for RPL practitioners.
• Action planning for implementing RPL in own context.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
