Description

This course equips learners with the skills to effectively advocate for the rights of individuals, families, groups, communities, and healthcare providers within the South African context. Participants will learn to identify rights violations, apply relevant legislation, and develop advocacy strategies to promote social justice and ethical practice.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Human Rights and Advocacy

Objectives:
• Understand the historical development of human rights in South Africa
• Define key human rights concepts and instruments
• Identify the role of advocacy in promoting rights
• Recognise the constitutional framework for rights in South Africa
• Explore the relationship between individual and community rights

Topics:
• Historical context of human rights in South Africa
• Universal Declaration of Human Rights and South African Constitution
• Key human rights principles: dignity, equality, freedom
• Types of rights: civil, political, socio-economic, cultural
• Introduction to advocacy: definitions, purpose, and types
• The role of civil society organisations in rights advocacy

Day 2: Legal and Policy Frameworks for Rights Advocacy

Objectives:
• Analyse the South African Bill of Rights and its application
• Understand key legislation relevant to advocacy (e.g., Promotion of Access to Information Act, Promotion of Administrative Justice Act)
• Identify policy gaps and opportunities for advocacy
• Explore international human rights instruments and their influence
• Learn how to use legal frameworks to support advocacy efforts

Topics:
• South African Bill of Rights: key provisions and limitations
• Relevant legislation: PAIA, PAJA, Equality Act, etc.
• International human rights treaties and South Africa's obligations
• Policy analysis: identifying gaps and advocacy entry points
• Case law examples: successful rights advocacy in South Africa
• Ethical considerations in using legal frameworks

Day 3: Advocacy Strategies and Planning

Objectives:
• Develop a comprehensive advocacy plan
• Identify stakeholders and build coalitions
• Use evidence-based research to support advocacy
• Understand different advocacy tactics (lobbying, media, campaigns)
• Set measurable goals and objectives for advocacy initiatives

• Components of an advocacy plan: goals, objectives, targets, tactics
• Stakeholder mapping and coalition building
• Research methods for advocacy: data collection and analysis
• Advocacy tactics: lobbying, media advocacy, public campaigns
• Developing key messages and framing issues
• Monitoring and evaluation of advocacy efforts

Day 4: Communication and Media for Advocacy

Objectives:
• Develop effective communication strategies for advocacy
• Use media platforms to amplify advocacy messages
• Write press releases, opinion pieces, and advocacy briefs
• Engage with journalists and media houses
• Manage public relations and crisis communication

Topics:
• Communication strategy development
• Media landscape in South Africa: print, broadcast, digital
• Writing for advocacy: press releases, op-eds, briefs
• Social media advocacy: platforms, content, engagement
• Media relations: pitching stories, interviews, press conferences
• Crisis communication and message control

Day 5: Community Engagement and Mobilisation

Objectives:
• Understand principles of community engagement and participation
• Develop strategies for mobilising communities around rights issues
• Facilitate community meetings and workshops
• Build partnerships with community-based organisations
• Address power dynamics and ensure inclusive participation

• Principles of community engagement: respect, trust, reciprocity
• Community mobilisation techniques: door-to-door, public meetings
• Facilitation skills for community workshops
• Partnering with CBOs, FBOs, and traditional leaders
• Addressing marginalisation: gender, disability, youth, etc.
• Case studies of successful community mobilisation

Day 6: Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting in Advocacy

Objectives:
• Design monitoring and evaluation frameworks for advocacy
• Collect and analyse data to measure advocacy impact
• Report effectively to stakeholders and funders
• Use feedback loops to adapt advocacy strategies
• Document lessons learned and best practices

Topics:
• M&E frameworks for advocacy: logic models, theories of change
• Data collection methods: surveys, interviews, focus groups
• Quantitative and qualitative indicators for advocacy
• Reporting formats: progress reports, impact stories, dashboards
• Adaptive management: using M&E findings to adjust strategies
• Ethical issues in M&E: confidentiality, informed consent

Day 7: Integration, Action Planning, and Course Review

Objectives:
• Synthesise learning from the course into a comprehensive advocacy plan
• Develop a personal action plan for applying advocacy skills
• Practice presenting advocacy plans to peers for feedback
• Review key concepts and address remaining questions
• Commit to ongoing professional development in advocacy

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
