Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to monitor, report, and advise on safety principles applicable to non-electrical and non-mechanical sources of energy, such as thermal, chemical, kinetic, potential, and radiation energy. Participants will learn to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement control measures to ensure a safe working environment in compliance with South African health and safety legislation.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Non-Electrical and Non-Mechanical Energy Sources and Their Hazards

Objectives:
• Identify common non-electrical and non-mechanical energy sources in the workplace.
• Describe the basic principles of energy isolation and hazard recognition.
• Explain the risks associated with thermal, chemical, kinetic, potential, and radiant energy.
• Apply basic hazard control measures for non-electrical and non-mechanical energy sources.
• Understand the legal and regulatory framework governing energy safety.

• Overview of energy sources: thermal, chemical, kinetic, potential, radiant, and others.
• Hazard identification: energy source mapping and risk assessment.
• Energy isolation principles: lockout/tagout for non-electrical energy.
• Control measures: engineering controls, administrative controls, PPE.
• Legal framework: OHS Act, regulations, and standards relevant to energy safety.
• Case studies: incidents involving non-electrical/non-mechanical energy.
• Safe work procedures: permits, signage, and communication.
• Group activity: hazard identification exercise.

Day 2: Practical Application and Integration of Safety Principles

Objectives:
• Demonstrate safe work practices for specific non-electrical and non-mechanical energy sources.
• Conduct energy isolation and verification procedures.
• Apply emergency response measures for energy-related incidents.
• Evaluate and improve safety protocols through risk assessment.
• Integrate safety principles into daily work routines.

Topics:
• Practical session: energy isolation and lockout/tagout for hydraulic, pneumatic, and thermal systems.
• Risk assessment workshop: job safety analysis (JSA) for non-electrical energy tasks.
• Emergency response: first aid for burns, chemical exposure, and kinetic energy injuries.
• Maintenance and inspection of energy control devices.
• Behavioural safety: human factors and energy safety culture.
• Review and assessment: written test and practical demonstration.
• Action planning: developing personal safety checklists.

Practicals

Overview

Practicals are essential to develop hands-on competence in isolating and controlling non-electrical and non-mechanical energy sources. Learners will practice energy isolation, lockout/tagout procedures, and emergency response in a controlled environment.

Practical Activities
  • Energy Isolation and Lockout/Tagout — Learners practice isolating hydraulic, pneumatic, and thermal energy sources using appropriate lockout/tagout devices and verification procedures. (3h)
  • Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment — Learners conduct a job safety analysis (JSA) for a scenario involving chemical and kinetic energy sources, and propose control measures. (2h)
  • Emergency Response Simulation — Learners respond to a simulated energy-related incident (e.g., steam burn or chemical splash) using appropriate first aid and emergency procedures. (1h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
