Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to CNC Machining and Complex Components

Objectives:
• Understand the scope and application of CNC machining for complex components
• Identify key characteristics of complex components
• Recognise safety and quality standards in CNC machining
• Explain the role of planning in CNC machining processes

Topics:
• Overview of CNC machining and its importance
• Definition and examples of complex components
• Safety regulations and quality assurance principles
• Introduction to machining planning and documentation

Day 2: Reading and Interpreting Engineering Drawings

Objectives:
• Interpret geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) symbols
• Identify material specifications and surface finish requirements
• Analyse part features and machining challenges
• Relate drawing requirements to machining processes

Topics:
• Engineering drawing standards (SANS, ISO)
• GD&T symbols and datums
• Material selection and specifications
• Identifying critical features and tolerances

Day 3: Process Planning and Tool Selection

Objectives:
• Develop a logical machining sequence for complex parts
• Select appropriate cutting tools and tool holders
• Determine cutting parameters (speed, feed, depth of cut)
• Plan workholding and fixturing strategies

• Machining process planning steps
• Tool selection criteria and tool materials
• Cutting parameters calculation
• Workholding methods for complex geometries

Day 4: CAM Programming for Complex Components

Objectives:
• Create CAM programs for multi-axis machining
• Define toolpaths for complex features
• Simulate and verify toolpaths
• Optimise programs for efficiency and quality

• Introduction to CAM software
• 2D and 3D toolpath strategies
• Multi-axis machining considerations
• Simulation and collision detection

Day 5: Setup and Workholding Techniques

Objectives:
• Set up CNC machine for complex component machining
• Align and calibrate workholding devices
• Establish workpiece zero and tool offsets
• Verify setup accuracy using probing or indicators

Topics:
• Machine setup procedures
• Workholding devices (vices, chucks, fixtures)
• Datum setting and offset management
• Probing and inspection for setup verification

Day 6: Machining and In-Process Inspection

Objectives:
• Execute machining operations for complex components
• Monitor cutting conditions and make adjustments
• Perform in-process inspection using gauges and CMM
• Troubleshoot common machining issues

Topics:
• Running CNC programs for complex parts
• Cutting fluid application and chip control
• In-process measurement techniques
• Identifying and resolving errors

Day 7: Quality Assurance and Final Assessment

Objectives:
• Inspect finished components against specifications
• Document inspection results and deviations
• Apply corrective actions for non-conformances
• Consolidate planning and machining knowledge

Topics:
• Final inspection methods (CMM, surface roughness)
• Quality reports and traceability
• Corrective action procedures
• Course review and integrated assessment

Practicals

24 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practicals allow learners to apply planning concepts to real CNC machining of complex components. Learners will set up machines, program CAM, machine parts, and inspect them, reinforcing theoretical knowledge through supervised practice.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Drawing Interpretation and Process Planning — Learners interpret a complex component drawing and develop a detailed process plan including tool selection and sequence. (4h)
  • Practical 2: CAM Programming and Simulation — Using CAM software, learners generate toolpaths for a complex part and simulate to verify collision-free operation. (6h)
  • Practical 3: Machine Setup and Tool Offsetting — Learners set up the CNC machine, install workholding, probe workpiece zero, and set tool offsets. (4h)
  • Practical 4: Machining a Complex Component — Under supervision, learners run the CAM program to machine a complex component, monitoring and adjusting as needed. (6h)
  • Practical 5: Final Inspection and Quality Report — Learners inspect the machined component using CMM and surface gauges, and complete a quality report. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
