This course is designed for construction project managers, site supervisors, civil engineers, and other built-environment professionals seeking to formalise or refresh their integrated construction management skills.

Prerequisites

A relevant National Diploma or Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field; or at least three years of practical construction experience.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Construction Management Principles

Objectives:
• Understand the scope and importance of construction management in the South African context.
• Identify key stakeholders and their roles in construction projects.
• Differentiate between project management and construction management.
• Recognise the regulatory framework governing construction in South Africa.

• Stakeholder identification and engagement.
• Regulatory and legal requirements (including NHBRC, CIDB, and OHS Act).
• Ethics and professionalism in construction management.

Day 2: Project Lifecycle and Planning

Objectives:
• Describe the phases of a construction project lifecycle.
• Apply project planning techniques to construction projects.
• Develop a work breakdown structure (WBS) for a typical construction project.
• Understand the importance of feasibility studies and site analysis.

Topics:
• Project lifecycle: initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, closure.
• Feasibility studies and site selection.
• Work breakdown structure (WBS) creation.
• Scheduling techniques: Gantt charts, critical path method (CPM).
• Resource planning and allocation.
• Risk identification and management planning.

Day 3: Cost Management and Procurement

Objectives:
• Apply cost estimation methods for construction projects.
• Understand procurement processes and contract types.
• Develop a project budget and monitor costs.
• Evaluate tendering and bidding procedures in South Africa.

Day 4: Quality Management and Site Safety

• Conduct quality inspections and audits.
• Apply occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations on site.
• Develop a safety plan and conduct risk assessments.

• Quality management principles (ISO 9001).
• Quality control vs. quality assurance.

• Hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRA).
• Safety file development and site audits.
• Incident reporting and investigation.

Day 5: Resource Management and Labour Relations

Objectives:
• Manage human resources effectively on construction sites.
• Understand labour legislation and employment conditions.
• Apply techniques for managing subcontractors and suppliers.
• Resolve conflicts and manage disputes.

• Workforce planning and productivity.
• Labour Relations Act and Basic Conditions of Employment Act.
• Managing subcontractor performance.
• Supply chain management in construction.
• Conflict resolution and dispute avoidance.
• Communication and team leadership.

Day 6: Monitoring, Control, and Reporting

Objectives:
• Monitor project progress against baselines.
• Use earned value management (EVM) for performance measurement.
• Prepare progress reports for stakeholders.
• Implement corrective actions to keep projects on track.

• Performance measurement: actual vs. planned.
• Earned value management (EVM) concepts.

Day 7: Integration, Review, and Assessment

• Integrate all construction management principles into a cohesive approach.
• Apply knowledge to a comprehensive case study.
• Demonstrate competence through a summative assessment.
• Develop an action plan for continuous professional development.

• Integration of planning, cost, quality, safety, and resource management.
• Case study: real-world construction project simulation.

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
