Airfreight Cargo Security and Restraint Training

SAQA US 252428 | NQF 3 | Credits 6 | Duration 3 Days
From $967 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to secure cargo for airfreight, ensuring compliance with international air cargo security regulations. Participants will learn to identify security risks, apply appropriate restraint techniques, and maintain the integrity of cargo throughout the airfreight process. The course aims to mitigate theft, tampering, and safety hazards in the air cargo supply chain.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply airfreight cargo security procedures to prevent unauthorized access and tampering.
  • Analyze security risks associated with different types of air cargo and implement appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Demonstrate correct methods for restraining cargo to prevent movement during air transport.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of security seals and tamper-evident devices on cargo units.
  • Implement documentation procedures for secure cargo handling and chain of custody.
  • Comply with relevant South African and international air cargo security regulations and standards.

Target Audience

This course is designed for cargo handlers, warehouse staff, freight forwarders, and security personnel involved in the preparation, handling, and dispatch of airfreight cargo. It is also suitable for supervisors and managers seeking to enhance security protocols within their operations.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Airfreight Cargo Security and Restraint

Objectives:
• Understand the regulatory framework governing airfreight security and restraint.
• Identify different types of cargo and their associated security risks.
• Explain the principles of load restraint and weight distribution.
• Recognise the roles and responsibilities of personnel in cargo security.
• Describe the consequences of inadequate cargo restraint.

Topics:
• Introduction to airfreight security regulations (ICAO, IATA, SACAA).
• Types of cargo: general, dangerous goods, high-value, perishable.
• Security threats: theft, tampering, sabotage, terrorism.
• Principles of load restraint: friction, tie-down, blocking, bracing.
• Weight and balance fundamentals.
• Roles: shipper, forwarder, ground handler, airline.
• Case study: incidents caused by poor restraint.

Day 2: Practical Restraint Techniques and Security Procedures

Objectives:
• Apply correct tie-down methods using various restraint equipment.
• Calculate required restraint forces for different cargo weights.
• Implement security seals and tamper-evident devices.
• Conduct pre-loading inspections and documentation checks.
• Respond to security breaches and cargo irregularities.

Topics:
• Restraint equipment: straps, nets, chains, pallet nets, containers.
• Calculating restraint forces: forward, aft, lateral, vertical.
• Application of tie-down patterns: direct, loop, lashing.
• Security seals: types, application, recording.
• Pre-loading inspection checklist.
• Documentation: air waybill, security declaration, manifest.
• Emergency procedures for suspicious items.

Day 3: Advanced Applications and Integrated Practical

Objectives:
• Plan and execute a complete cargo build-up for a mixed load.
• Apply risk assessment and mitigation strategies for high-risk cargo.
• Conduct post-flight inspections and report deficiencies.
• Demonstrate compliance with security regulations during loading.
• Integrate knowledge into a simulated operational scenario.

Topics:
• Advanced load planning for ULDs and pallets.
• Risk assessment matrix for cargo security.
• High-risk cargo: valuables, dangerous goods, human remains.
• Post-flight inspection: checking restraint integrity.
• Reporting and corrective actions.
• Regulatory updates and continuous improvement.
• Simulated scenario: cargo build-up, security check, restraint verification.

Practicals

12 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Practical sessions form a core component of this course, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge in simulated cargo loading environments. Learners will practice tie-down techniques, use restraint equipment, and implement security procedures under supervision.

Practical Activities
  • Restraint Equipment Familiarisation — Learners handle and inspect various restraint devices such as straps, nets, chains, and pallet nets, and practice correct attachment and tensioning. (2h)
  • Tie-Down Calculations and Application — Learners calculate required restraint forces for given cargo weights and apply appropriate tie-down patterns on mock cargo. (3h)
  • Cargo Build-Up and Security Sealing — Learners build up a mixed cargo load on a pallet, apply restraint, and install security seals, completing documentation. (3h)
  • Integrated Simulated Operation — Teams conduct a full end-to-end cargo loading operation from receiving to final restraint, including risk assessment and post-flight inspection. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
