Automotive Tyres and Wheels Knowledge Training

SAQA US 259885 | NQF 3 | Credits 7 | Duration 4 Days
From $1,107 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the fundamental knowledge required to identify, describe, and understand the key components and functions of automotive tyres and wheels. It covers tyre construction, wheel types, sizing systems, and safety considerations essential for anyone working in the automotive service or sales environment.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify and describe the main components and construction types of automotive tyres.
  • Explain the tyre sizing system and interpret sidewall markings.
  • Distinguish between different wheel types, materials, and offset configurations.
  • Apply safety procedures for tyre inspection, mounting, and demounting.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of tyre wear patterns and their causes.
  • Evaluate the importance of correct tyre pressure and load ratings.

Target Audience

This course is designed for automotive service technicians, tyre fitters, sales consultants in the tyre and wheel industry, and anyone entering the automotive aftermarket sector who needs a solid grounding in tyre and wheel technology.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Tyres and Wheels

Objectives:
• Identify the components and functions of automotive tyres and wheels
• Explain tyre construction, materials, and manufacturing processes
• Understand tyre size markings and load/speed ratings
• Recognise the importance of tyre safety and legal requirements

Topics:
• Overview of tyre and wheel systems in vehicles
• Tyre components: tread, sidewall, bead, carcass, belts
• Tyre construction types: radial, bias-ply, run-flat
• Wheel types: steel, alloy, split-rim
• Tyre size markings (e.g., 205/55R16) and load/speed indices
• Safety standards (SANS, SAQA) and legal requirements
• Factors affecting tyre performance: pressure, temperature, wear

Day 2: Tyre and Wheel Selection and Fitment

Objectives:
• Select appropriate tyres and wheels for specific vehicle applications
• Demonstrate correct tyre fitment and balancing procedures
• Understand wheel alignment principles and their impact on tyre life
• Identify common fitting errors and their consequences

Topics:
• Tyre selection criteria: vehicle type, driving conditions, load
• Wheel offset, backspacing, and bolt patterns
• Tyre fitment process: mounting, inflation, torque settings
• Wheel balancing: static and dynamic
• Wheel alignment: camber, caster, toe angles
• Common fitment mistakes: incorrect size, over/under-inflation
• Practical demonstration: fitting a tyre to a rim

Day 3: Tyre Wear, Damage, and Maintenance

Objectives:
• Diagnose tyre wear patterns and identify root causes
• Inspect tyres for damage and assess repairability
• Perform routine tyre maintenance including pressure checks and rotation
• Understand the effects of under-inflation, overloading, and misalignment

Topics:
• Tyre wear patterns: centre wear, edge wear, cupping, feathering
• Causes of irregular wear: pressure, alignment, suspension issues
• Tyre damage: cuts, bulges, punctures, sidewall damage
• Tyre repair methods: plugs, patches, and limits of repairability
• Maintenance procedures: pressure checks, visual inspections, rotation patterns
• Effects of under-inflation, overloading, and high speed on tyre life
• Record-keeping and compliance with fleet maintenance schedules

Day 4: Advanced Topics and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Explain tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) and their operation
• Understand retreading, regrooving, and recycling processes
• Integrate tyre and wheel knowledge into overall vehicle safety
• Apply troubleshooting skills to real-world scenarios

Topics:
• Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS): direct vs indirect
• Retreading and regrooving: processes, benefits, legal requirements
• Tyre recycling and environmental impact
• Wheel bearing and hub maintenance
• Troubleshooting common tyre and wheel issues
• Case studies: blowouts, tread separation, wheel failure
• Final assessment and review

Practicals

12 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practicals are essential for developing the psychomotor skills required for tyre and wheel inspection, fitment, balancing, and maintenance. Learners will apply theoretical knowledge in a workshop setting to ensure competence in real-world tasks.

Practical Activities
  • Tyre Inspection and Wear Analysis — Learners inspect various tyres, identify wear patterns, measure tread depth, and document findings. (3h)
  • Tyre Fitment and Balancing — Learners mount a tyre onto a rim, inflate to correct pressure, and balance the assembly using a balancing machine. (4h)
  • Wheel Alignment Checks — Learners perform a basic wheel alignment check using alignment gauges and adjust camber/caster/toe as needed. (3h)
  • Tyre Repair and TPMS Diagnostics — Learners repair a puncture using a plug and patch, and diagnose a TPMS fault using a scan tool. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
