Description

This course equips transport planning professionals with the skills to collect, evaluate, analyse, and communicate data effectively. Participants will learn to apply statistical and spatial analysis techniques to inform transport decisions and present findings to stakeholders.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Transport Planning and Data

Objectives:
• Understand the role of data in transport planning
• Identify different types of transport data
• Recognise the importance of data quality
• Describe the transport planning process
• Outline the course structure and assessment

• Types of transport data: traffic counts, travel surveys, GIS data
• Data quality and reliability
• The transport planning process: from data to policy
• Introduction to SAQA unit standard 244246

Day 2: Data Collection Methods and Techniques

Objectives:
• Describe various data collection methods
• Select appropriate methods for different transport contexts
• Plan a data collection exercise
• Understand sampling techniques
• Apply ethical considerations in data collection

• Manual and automatic traffic counts
• Travel surveys: household, roadside, and online
• GPS and mobile data collection
• Sampling strategies
• Ethical and legal considerations

Day 3: Data Management and Preparation

Objectives:
• Organise and store transport data effectively
• Clean and validate data for analysis
• Use software tools for data management
• Create a data dictionary
• Understand data formats and conversion

• Introduction to Excel and GIS for data management
• Data dictionaries and metadata

Day 4: Descriptive Statistics and Visualisation

Objectives:
• Calculate and interpret descriptive statistics
• Create meaningful data visualisations
• Use graphs and charts to communicate findings
• Identify patterns and trends in transport data
• Present data effectively

• Measures of central tendency and dispersion
• Frequency distributions
• Creating histograms, bar charts, and scatter plots

Day 5: Inferential Statistics and Hypothesis Testing

• Perform hypothesis tests for transport data
• Interpret confidence intervals
• Use statistical software for analysis
• Apply inferential statistics to travel behaviour

Day 6: Advanced Analysis Techniques and Modelling

Day 7: Reporting, Recommendations, and Course Review

Practicals

20 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Practical sessions provide hands-on experience with data collection instruments, software tools for data management and analysis, and real-world transport datasets. Learners will conduct traffic counts, clean and analyse data, and produce a mini report with recommendations.

Practical Activities
  • Traffic Count Exercise — Learners conduct manual traffic counts at a designated intersection and record data using standard forms. (4h)
  • Data Cleaning and Management in Excel — Using provided datasets, learners clean, validate, and organise data in Excel, creating a data dictionary. (4h)
  • Descriptive Statistics and Visualisation — Learners compute descriptive statistics and create charts in Excel to summarise transport data. (4h)
  • Hypothesis Testing with SPSS — Learners perform t-tests and chi-square tests on transport survey data using SPSS. (4h)
  • Mini Analysis Project — Learners analyse a real transport dataset, produce a short report with visualisations and recommendations. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
