This course equips marine engineering personnel with the essential knowledge and practical skills to perform engine room watch keeping duties safely and effectively, both at sea and in port. It covers the principles of watch keeping, monitoring of machinery, and emergency response procedures in compliance with international maritime regulations.

Target Audience

This training is designed for junior marine engineers, engine room ratings, and cadets who are required to stand watch in the engine room of merchant vessels or offshore installations.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Engine Room Watch Keeping

Objectives:
• Understand the role and responsibilities of an engine room watch keeper
• Identify key safety procedures and personal protective equipment
• Describe the basic layout of an engine room
• Explain the importance of communication and teamwork
• Recognize the legal framework governing watch keeping

• Engine room familiarization: main machinery and auxiliary systems
• Watch keeping principles: STCW requirements

Day 2: Engine Room Systems and Components

Objectives:
• Identify main engine components and their functions
• Understand auxiliary systems: cooling, lubrication, fuel
• Describe the operation of pumps, compressors, and purifiers
• Recognize common system layouts and piping
• Explain basic thermodynamics in engine systems

Topics:
• Main engine types: two-stroke and four-stroke diesels
• Cooling water systems: fresh and sea water
• Lubrication oil systems and treatment
• Fuel oil system: storage, transfer, and treatment
• Compressed air systems and starting air

Day 3: Watch Keeping Procedures at Sea

Objectives:
• Perform routine watch keeping duties under supervision
• Monitor engine parameters and recognize abnormalities
• Take and record readings from gauges and instruments
• Respond to alarms and basic malfunctions
• Maintain engine room logbooks correctly

• Standard watch keeping routines (rounds, readings, checks)
• Instrumentation: temperature, pressure, level, speed sensors
• Alarm systems and response procedures
• Log book entries: data recording and reporting

Day 4: Machinery Operation and Control

Objectives:
• Operate main engine controls safely
• Manage auxiliary machinery: generators, boilers, compressors
• Understand automatic control systems and remote operation
• Perform start-up and shut-down procedures
• Troubleshoot common operational issues

• Main engine control: start, stop, speed adjustments

Day 5: Fuel and Lubrication Management

Objectives:
• Understand fuel properties and handling procedures
• Manage fuel transfer and bunkering operations
• Monitor lubrication oil quality and consumption
• Perform fuel and oil sampling and testing
• Implement proper storage and waste management

• Fuel types: HFO, MDO, MGO; properties and specifications
• Bunkering procedures: safety, documentation, sampling
• Fuel treatment: settling, centrifuging, heating
• Lubrication oil: types, analysis, change intervals
• Waste oil and sludge handling: MARPOL requirements

Day 6: Safety and Emergency Procedures

Objectives:
• Apply fire prevention and firefighting techniques in engine room
• Respond to flooding and bilge alarms
• Use emergency equipment: SCBA, EEBD, fire extinguishers
• Execute emergency shutdown procedures
• Participate in drills and muster procedures

• Fixed firefighting systems: CO2, foam, water mist
• Flooding prevention: bilge system operation
• Emergency shutdown of machinery
• Personal survival: use of breathing apparatus

Day 7: Engine Room Watch Keeping in Port

Objectives:
• Perform watch keeping duties during port stays
• Monitor auxiliary systems while main engine is off
• Manage shore connections: power, water, bunkers
• Coordinate with shore personnel and ship's officers
• Maintain security and safety during port operations

Day 8: Maintenance and Repair Basics

Day 9: Environmental Compliance and Pollution Prevention

• Operate oily water separator correctly
• Maintain garbage and waste records
• Implement energy efficiency measures

Day 10: Advanced Watch Keeping and Troubleshooting

• Implement corrective actions safely

Day 11: Practical Integration and Simulation

Overview

The practicals are integral to this course, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge in a supervised engine room environment. Hands-on sessions cover watch keeping rounds, machinery operation, emergency response, and maintenance tasks, ensuring competence and confidence.

Practical Activities
  • Watch Keeping Rounds and Log Keeping — Learners perform supervised watch keeping rounds in a simulated engine room, taking readings from gauges and recording data in logbooks. (8h)
  • Main Engine and Auxiliary Machinery Operation — Learners operate main engine controls, start and stop generators, manage boiler operations, and respond to simulated alarms. (12h)
  • Emergency Response Drills — Learners participate in fire, flooding, and blackout drills in the engine room, using actual firefighting and emergency equipment. (8h)
  • Routine Maintenance and Repair Tasks — Learners perform routine maintenance such as filter cleaning, oil sampling, and basic repairs on pumps and valves under supervision. (8h)
  • Bunkering and Oily Water Separator Operation — Learners simulate bunkering operations and operate an oily water separator, including monitoring and record keeping. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
