Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to perform marine rigging operations safely and effectively onboard vessels. It covers the planning, execution, and supervision of rigging tasks in accordance with South African maritime regulations and international best practices.

Target Audience

The course is designed for riggers, deck crew, and marine operations personnel working on vessels in the South African maritime industry, including offshore supply vessels, fishing trawlers, and cargo ships.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Marine Rigging and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the scope and importance of marine rigging operations onboard vessels
• Identify relevant legislation, standards, and industry best practices
• Recognise common hazards and risk control measures in marine rigging
• Describe the roles and responsibilities of rigging personnel

Topics:
• Overview of marine rigging operations and vessel procedures
• Introduction to Unit Standard 113998
• Legal framework: OHS Act, SANS, and marine regulations
• Hazard identification and risk assessment in rigging
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) for marine rigging
• Safe work permits and lock-out/tag-out procedures
• Communication protocols and hand signals

Day 2: Rigging Equipment, Inspection, and Maintenance

Objectives:
• Identify various types of rigging equipment used onboard vessels
• Explain inspection criteria and frequency for rigging gear
• Perform basic pre-use inspections on slings, shackles, and hooks
• Understand maintenance and storage requirements for rigging equipment

Topics:
• Types of wire rope, synthetic slings, and chain slings
• Shackles, hooks, eyebolts, turnbuckles, and spreader bars
• Inspection techniques: visual, tactile, and dimensional checks
• Rejection criteria and colour coding systems
• Maintenance schedules and lubrication
• Storage practices to prevent corrosion and damage
• Manufacturer specifications and load ratings

Day 3: Load Calculations, Slinging, and Lifting Techniques

Objectives:
• Calculate safe working loads (SWL) and working load limits (WLL)
• Determine sling angles and their effect on load capacity
• Select appropriate rigging configurations for common lifts
• Apply proper slinging and hitching methods

Topics:
• Load weight estimation and centre of gravity
• SWL vs WLL: definitions and application
• Sling angle factors and reduction in capacity
• Basket hitch, choker hitch, and bridle configurations
• Tag lines and load control during lifts
• Hand signals and voice communication with crane operators
• Pre-lift planning and lift zone management

Day 4: Vessel-Specific Rigging Procedures and Critical Lifts

Objectives:
• Identify vessel-specific rigging challenges (e.g., motion, confined spaces)
• Plan and execute critical lifts using lift plans
• Apply proper procedures for lifting personnel (man baskets)
• Understand dynamic factors affecting offshore lifts

Topics:
• Vessel motion compensation and sea state considerations
• Rigging in confined spaces and over water
• Lift plan development: risk assessment, method statement
• Critical lift criteria and approval processes
• Personnel lifting: man basket design and safety requirements
• Deck loading and securing loads for sea transport
• Emergency procedures for rigging failures

Day 5: Practical Application and Assessment

Objectives:
• Demonstrate competence in rigging inspections and pre-use checks
• Perform safe slinging and lifting operations under supervision
• Complete a lift plan for a simulated vessel lift
• Apply all safety protocols in a practical scenario

Topics:
• Review of key learning points
• Practical exercise: inspect and select rigging gear
• Practical exercise: sling a load using correct techniques
• Practical exercise: execute a simple lift with communication
• Written assessment covering theory
• Feedback and close-out

Overview

Practical sessions reinforce theoretical knowledge through hands-on inspection, slinging, and lifting exercises. Learners apply safety procedures, use real equipment, and demonstrate competence in a controlled environment.

Practical Activities
  • Pre-Use Inspection of Rigging Gear — Learners inspect wire ropes, synthetic slings, shackles, and hooks for damage, wear, and correct markings. (4h)
  • Slinging and Hitching Techniques — Learners practice basket, choker, and bridle hitches on various loads, adjusting for sling angles. (4h)
  • Lift Planning and Execution — Teams develop a lift plan for a simulated vessel lift, then execute the lift using a crane or gantry. (4h)
  • Critical Lift Simulation — Simulate a critical lift involving a man basket or heavy equipment, with motion compensation considerations. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
