This course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills to safely and efficiently operate vessel machinery fittings and equipment in a maritime or marine engineering environment. It covers pre-operational checks, start-up, monitoring, shutdown, and emergency procedures, ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.

Target Audience

Marine engineers, deck officers, and technical crew members responsible for operating vessel machinery and equipment on commercial ships, offshore platforms, or in port operations.

Prerequisites

Learners must have completed basic marine engineering or deck training, or have equivalent practical experience.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Vessel Machinery and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the scope and importance of vessel machinery fittings and equipment.
• Identify key safety regulations and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
• Recognise common machinery components and their functions.
• Apply basic hazard identification and risk assessment procedures.

Topics:
• Overview of vessel machinery systems (propulsion, auxiliary, deck).
• Role of a fitter and relevant legislation (OHSA, SAMSA).
• Personal and workplace safety: PPE, lock-out/tag-out, fire safety.
• Introduction to tools: hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments.
• Basic engineering drawings and symbols.
• Hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRA).

Day 2: Fittings and Valves

Objectives:
• Identify different types of fittings and valves used on vessels.
• Describe the construction and operation of common valves.
• Demonstrate correct handling and installation of fittings.
• Apply sealing and jointing techniques.

Topics:
• Types of fittings: flanges, couplings, elbows, tees, reducers.
• Valve types: gate, globe, ball, butterfly, check, relief valves.
• Valve materials and pressure ratings.
• Gaskets, packings, and sealing compounds.
• Threaded and welded connections.
• Pipe supports and hangers.
• Practical: Inspecting and identifying fittings and valves.

Day 3: Pumps and Pumping Systems

Objectives:
• Classify pumps used in vessel systems.
• Explain operating principles of centrifugal and positive displacement pumps.
• Perform routine pump inspection and maintenance.
• Troubleshoot common pump faults.

Topics:
• Pump types: centrifugal, gear, screw, diaphragm, reciprocating.
• Pump components: impellers, casings, seals, bearings.
• Pump performance curves and cavitation.
• Installation and alignment of pumps.
• Maintenance: lubrication, packing replacement, seal inspection.
• Troubleshooting: low flow, noise, vibration, leaks.
• Practical: Dismantling and reassembling a centrifugal pump.

Day 4: Piping Systems and Hydraulics

Objectives:
• Interpret piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
• Describe hydraulic principles and components.
• Perform pipe fabrication and jointing.
• Test piping systems for leaks and pressure.

Topics:
• Piping materials: steel, copper, plastic, rubber hoses.
• Pipe sizing, schedules, and colour coding.
• Hydraulic systems: pumps, cylinders, motors, control valves.
• Pipe bending and threading.
• Flanged and compression joints.
• Pressure testing and leak detection.
• Practical: Fabricating a simple pipe assembly.

Day 5: Deck Machinery and Ancillary Equipment

Objectives:
• Identify deck machinery: winches, capstans, cranes, mooring equipment.
• Explain operation and maintenance of deck machinery.
• Describe auxiliary systems: steering gear, HVAC, compressors.
• Apply safe rigging and lifting practices.

Topics:
• Winches, windlasses, capstans: components and drives.
• Cranes and davits: load charts, safety devices.
• Mooring and towing fittings.
• Steering gear: ram-type, rotary vane.
• Compressed air systems: compressors, dryers, receivers.
• Refrigeration and HVAC basics.
• Rigging hardware: shackles, slings, hooks.
• Practical: Inspecting and operating a deck winch.

Day 6: Maintenance, Troubleshooting, and Repairs

Objectives:
• Develop preventive maintenance schedules.
• Diagnose and rectify common machinery faults.
• Perform routine overhauls on fittings and equipment.
• Document maintenance activities and reports.

Topics:
• Preventive vs. corrective maintenance.
• Lubrication systems and schedules.
• Bearing types, fitting, and replacement.
• Seal replacement: mechanical seals, gland packings.
• Alignment techniques: laser, dial indicator.
• Vibration analysis and thermography basics.
• Maintenance logs and work orders.
• Practical: Replacing a valve and testing.

Day 7: Integration, Assessment, and Final Practical

Objectives:
• Integrate knowledge across all vessel systems.
• Perform a comprehensive inspection and repair task.
• Complete written and practical assessments.
• Review course outcomes and safety culture.

Topics:
• System integration: engine room, deck, auxiliary.
• Emergency procedures: fire, flooding, machinery failure.
• Review of key concepts and Q&A.
• Written assessment.
• Final practical task: overhaul a pump or valve assembly.
• Feedback and certification.

Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are integral to this course, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge to real vessel machinery and fittings. Learners will dismantle, inspect, assemble, and test components such as pumps, valves, and deck machinery under supervision, developing essential fault-finding and maintenance skills.

Practical Activities
  • Valve and Fitting Identification and Handling — Learners identify various valves and fittings, practice jointing and sealing techniques, and perform a pressure test. (4h)
  • Pump Overhaul — Learners dismantle a centrifugal pump, inspect components, replace seals and bearings, reassemble, and test operation. (6h)
  • Pipe Fabrication and Assembly — Learners cut, thread, and assemble a pipe section with fittings, then pressure test the assembly. (5h)
  • Deck Machinery Operation and Inspection — Learners inspect a deck winch, check brakes and clutches, perform lubrication, and operate under load. (5h)
  • Comprehensive System Maintenance Task — Learners perform a complete maintenance routine on a small piping system including valve replacement and pump alignment. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
