Radio Transceiver Operation for South Africa Training

SAQA US 260918 | NQF 3 | Credits 3 | Duration 1 Day
From $691 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to operate a radio transceiver effectively and safely within South African contexts, including compliance with ICASA regulations. It covers fundamental radio theory, operational procedures, and emergency communication protocols to ensure reliable communication in various sectors such as security, transportation, and emergency services.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate the ability to operate a radio transceiver in accordance with manufacturer instructions and South African regulatory requirements.
  • Apply correct radio communication procedures, including call signs, phonetic alphabet, and standard message formats.
  • Evaluate signal quality and troubleshoot common transmission issues to maintain effective communication.
  • Implement safety protocols and emergency procedures when using radio transceivers in various environments.
  • Analyze the impact of terrain, weather, and interference on radio signal propagation and adjust operations accordingly.
  • Comply with ICASA licensing and frequency usage regulations relevant to radio transceiver operation.

Target Audience

This course is designed for individuals who need to use two-way radio communication as part of their job, including security personnel, fleet controllers, event coordinators, and emergency response team members in South Africa.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Radio Transceiver Fundamentals and Operation

Objectives:
• Understand the regulatory framework for radio communication in South Africa
• Identify key components and functions of a radio transceiver
• Demonstrate correct procedures for operating a radio transceiver
• Apply proper radio communication protocols and techniques
• Troubleshoot common operational issues

Topics:
• Overview of ICASA regulations and licensing requirements
• Radio transceiver components: transmitter, receiver, antenna, power supply
• Frequency bands and channel allocation in South Africa
• Operating procedures: power-up, channel selection, transmission etiquette
• Communication protocols: call signs, phonetic alphabet, prowords
• Safety considerations: RF exposure, antenna installation
• Basic troubleshooting: interference, low power, antenna faults
• Practical exercise: radio operation and communication

Practicals

3 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Learners will engage in hands-on operation of radio transceivers, including setting up equipment, making transmissions, and responding to simulated scenarios. Practical sessions reinforce theoretical knowledge and build confidence in real-world radio communication.

Practical Activities
  • Radio Setup and Basic Operation — Learners will power up a transceiver, select appropriate channels, adjust volume and squelch, and perform a test transmission. (1h)
  • Communication Protocol Simulation — In pairs, learners simulate a routine communication scenario using standard protocols, including phonetic alphabet and prowords. (1h)
  • Fault Finding and Troubleshooting — Learners diagnose and resolve simulated faults such as no transmission, poor reception, or interference. (1h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
