Trawl Net Repair Techniques For Fishing Vessels Training

SAQA US 114034 | NQF 3 | Credits 10 | Duration 7 Days
From $1,523 per delegate

Description

This course equips participants with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required to repair and maintain trawl nets used on fishing vessels. Learners will master techniques for mending tears, replacing netting panels, and splicing ropes, ensuring nets remain seaworthy and compliant with industry standards. The training emphasizes safety, efficiency, and durability of repairs to minimize downtime at sea.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply appropriate techniques to identify and assess damage to trawl nets.
  • Demonstrate correct procedures for mending tears and holes using hand tools and netting needles.
  • Evaluate the structural integrity of repaired net sections and perform quality checks.
  • Design and implement reinforcement strategies for high-stress areas of the net.
  • Analyze different netting materials and select suitable repair methods for each type.
  • Demonstrate safe handling and storage of repair equipment and materials.

Target Audience

This course is designed for deckhands, net makers, fishing vessel crew members, and maintenance technicians who are responsible for the upkeep and repair of trawl nets. It is also suitable for supervisors seeking to enhance their team's net repair capabilities.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Day 3: Panel Replacement and Patching

Objectives:
• Measure and cut replacement netting panels
• Align mesh orientation correctly
• Sew in patches using lacing techniques
• Ensure seam strength and uniformity

Topics:
• Assessing damage requiring panel replacement

• Lacing methods: single lacing, double lacing
• Patch insertion: square patches, diamond patches
• Quality checks: tension, mesh alignment, knot security

Day 4: Repair of Codend and Chafing Gear

Objectives:
• Identify codend-specific wear patterns
• Repair codend mesh and strengthen weak areas
• Install and repair chafing gear (rubber, chain, netting)
• Apply techniques to reduce bycatch damage

Topics:
• Codend construction: mesh size, double twine, strengthening ropes
• Repairing tears in codend: reinforcing stitches, knot reinforcement
• Chafing gear types: rubber discs, chain mats, net chafers
• Attaching and replacing chafing gear

Day 6: Advanced Repair Techniques and Quality Control

Objectives:
• Perform complex repairs on large tears and structural damage
• Apply reinforcement techniques (double twine, riblines)
• Conduct quality control checks on repaired nets
• Plan repair workflow efficiently

Topics:
• Large tear repair: multiple panel replacement, reinforcement nets
• Ribline installation and repair for net shape retention
• Quality control: mesh count, knot strength, seam integrity
• Repair documentation and tagging
• Time management for repairs at sea

Day 7: Practical Assessment and Course Review

Objectives:
• Complete a full net repair scenario under timed conditions
• Demonstrate all techniques learned
• Troubleshoot common repair issues
• Receive feedback and final assessment

Topics:
• Simulated repair scenario: from damage assessment to completion
• Individual practical assessment
• Review of common mistakes and best practices
• Course summary and Q&A
• Certification criteria and next steps

Practicals

24 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are essential for learners to develop proficiency in trawl net repair techniques. These sessions allow supervised practice of knotting, splicing, patching, panel replacement, and gear repair using actual netting materials and tools, ensuring skills are transferable to real fishing vessel operations.

Practical Activities
  • Basic Knots and Stitches — Learners practice tying essential knots and performing basic repair stitches on sample netting pieces. (4h)
  • Patch and Panel Replacement — Learners measure, cut, and sew patches and replacement panels into damaged net sections. (6h)
  • Codend and Chafing Gear Repair — Learners repair codend tears and install/replace chafing gear components on a full-scale net mock-up. (6h)
  • Float, Ground Gear and Rigging Repairs — Learners replace floats, repair ground gear, and splice bridles on a rigging frame. (4h)
  • Integrated Repair Scenario — Learners complete a timed full-scale net repair from damage assessment to final quality check. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
