Overview

Practical sessions form the core of this course, allowing learners to apply theoretical concepts in supervised ensemble rehearsals and performances. Through guided group work, learners develop listening, blending, and communication skills essential for effective ensemble playing.

Practical Activities

Practical 1: Ensemble Setup and Basic Rehearsal — Learners form small ensembles, establish seating/standing arrangements, and rehearse a simple piece focusing on blend, balance, and basic cues. (8h)
Practical 2: Rhythm and Timing Drills — Learners perform rhythm exercises, clapping and playing patterns, focusing on subdivision, syncopation, and ensemble coordination. (8h)
Practical 3: Intonation and Tuning Session — Learners tune individually and as a group, practice interval recognition, and adjust pitch in real-time during ensemble playing. (8h)
Practical 4: Sectional Rehearsal and Peer Feedback — Each section (e.g., soprano, alto, tenor, bass or instrumental parts) rehearses separately, then presents to the full ensemble for feedback. (6h)
Practical 5: Mock Performance and Recording — Learners perform a piece in a simulated concert setting, record the performance, and analyze playback for self-evaluation. (6h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.
