Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Golf and the Golfing Industry

Objectives:
• Understand the history, origins, and global evolution of golf.
• Identify the structure and key stakeholders of the golf industry in South Africa.
• Recognise the rules, etiquette, and safety protocols governing golf.
• Explain the physical and mental benefits of golf as a sport.
• Describe the various formats of golf play and competitions.

• History and origins of golf
• The modern golf industry and its stakeholders
• Rules of golf and the role of the R&A and USGA
• Golf etiquette and safety on the course
• Physical and mental health benefits of golf
• Types of golf formats (stroke play, match play, scramble)

Day 2: Golf Equipment, Technology, and Course Management

Objectives:
• Identify different types of golf clubs, balls, and accessories and their uses.
• Understand the impact of technology on golf equipment and performance.
• Analyse golf course design, maintenance, and environmental considerations.
• Apply basic course management strategies for different playing conditions.
• Evaluate the cost and sustainability aspects of golf equipment.

• Golf club types, components, and fitting
• Golf ball construction and selection
• Technological advances in equipment (launch monitors, GPS, etc.)
• Golf course architecture and design principles
• Course maintenance and environmental stewardship
• Strategic course management and shot selection

Day 3: Golf Skills Development and Practice Methods

Objectives:
• Demonstrate fundamental golf swing mechanics and techniques.
• Develop proficiency in putting, chipping, and pitching.
• Understand the principles of practice and skill acquisition.
• Apply drills and training aids to improve performance.
• Assess personal skill levels and create a practice plan.

• Full swing fundamentals (grip, stance, posture, alignment)
• Short game techniques (putting, chipping, pitching, bunker play)
• Practice methodologies (blocked vs. random practice, deliberate practice)
• Use of training aids and technology in practice
• Physical conditioning for golf (flexibility, strength, balance)
• Creating an individualised practice schedule

Day 4: Coaching, Instruction, and Player Development

Objectives:
• Understand coaching philosophies and teaching methodologies in golf.
• Identify different learning styles and adapt instruction accordingly.
• Analyse swing faults and provide effective feedback.
• Plan and deliver a basic golf lesson for beginners.
• Explore pathways for junior and elite player development.

• Coaching theories and models (e.g., constraints-led approach)
• Communication and feedback techniques
• Swing analysis and fault detection
• Lesson planning and delivery
• Junior golf development programmes
• Talent identification and elite player pathways

Day 5: Business, Career, and Holistic Integration in Golf

Objectives:
• Describe career opportunities in the golf industry (professional, coaching, management).
• Understand the business aspects of golf facilities and events.
• Integrate knowledge of rules, equipment, skills, and coaching into a holistic view.
• Develop a personal professional development plan.
• Evaluate the role of golf in tourism, community development, and social responsibility.

• Careers in golf (PGA professional, coach, club manager, etc.)
• Golf facility operations and management
• Event planning and tournament management
• Golf tourism and economic impact
• Community golf initiatives and transformation
• Creating a personal development plan for a golf career

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
