Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to the Short Game and Foundational Techniques

Objectives:
• Define the short game and its importance in golf scoring.
• Identify the key components of the short game: chipping, pitching, and putting.
• Describe basic stance, grip, and alignment for short game shots.
• Explain the concept of distance control and club selection.

Topics:
• Overview of the short game: chipping, pitching, bunker play, and putting.
• Importance of the short game in lowering scores.
• Fundamental grip and stance for short game shots.
• Alignment and ball position for different short game shots.
• Introduction to distance control and tempo.
• Club selection: wedges, irons, and putters.
• Safety and etiquette on the practice green.

Day 2: Chipping Techniques and Practice Drills

Objectives:
• Demonstrate proper chipping technique with various clubs.
• Explain the role of the lower body in chipping.
• Apply different chipping trajectories and spin control.
• Practice chipping drills to improve accuracy and consistency.

Topics:
• Chipping fundamentals: setup, swing, and follow-through.
• Using different clubs for chipping: 8-iron to sand wedge.
• Low, medium, and high trajectory chips.
• Spin control: backspin and check spin.
• Weight distribution and lower body stability.
• Chipping drills: gate drill, ladder drill, and target practice.
• Common chipping errors and corrections.

Day 3: Pitching and Bunker Play Techniques

Objectives:
• Perform pitching shots with proper technique and distance control.
• Execute bunker shots with correct setup and swing path.
• Explain how to adjust for different lie conditions in bunkers.
• Practice pitching and bunker drills for consistency.

Topics:
• Pitching technique: longer swing, higher trajectory.
• Distance control in pitching: clock system and feel.
• Bunker play basics: open stance, open clubface, and swing path.
• Types of bunker shots: greenside, fairway, and buried lies.
• Adjusting for wet sand, hard sand, and fluffy sand.
• Pitching drills: distance ladder, target hitting.
• Bunker drills: line drill, explosion drill.
• Safety in bunkers: raking and etiquette.

Day 4: Putting Fundamentals and Green Reading

Objectives:
• Demonstrate proper putting grip, stance, and stroke.
• Read greens to determine slope, speed, and break.
• Apply distance control and aiming techniques.
• Practice putting drills to improve accuracy and consistency.

Topics:
• Putting grip: conventional, claw, and cross-handed.
• Putting stroke: pendulum motion, shoulders, and arms.
• Distance control: length of backswing and tempo.
• Green reading: assessing slope, grain, and speed.
• Aiming techniques: line, spot putting, and intermediate targets.
• Putting drills: circle drill, gate drill, and ladder drill.
• Common putting faults and corrections.
• Practice routines for putting.

Day 5: Advanced Short Game Techniques and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Combine chipping, pitching, bunker play, and putting in on-course scenarios.
• Develop a pre-shot routine for short game shots.
• Analyze and adapt to different course conditions and lies.
• Design a personal practice plan for short game improvement.
• Assess and evaluate short game performance.

Topics:
• Advanced short game shots: flop shot, bump-and-run, and lob shot.
• Playing from difficult lies: divots, uphill/downhill, and rough.
• Pre-shot routine for short game: visualization and process.
• On-course scenario practice: up-and-down challenges.
• Mental approach: focus, confidence, and decision-making.
• Practice plan design: drills, frequency, and tracking progress.
• Performance assessment: stroke average, up-and-down percentage.
• Course management: shot selection and risk assessment.

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
