This course equips learners with the skills to design, develop, and implement exhibition displays that effectively communicate organisational messages. It covers the entire exhibition lifecycle, from conceptualisation and planning to execution and evaluation, ensuring compliance with industry standards and client requirements.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, a basic understanding of project management or event coordination is beneficial.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Exhibition Design

Objectives:
• Understand the role and scope of exhibition design within the events industry.
• Identify key principles of design, space planning, and visitor flow.
• Recognise the importance of branding and messaging in exhibitions.
• Explore materials, finishes, and sustainability considerations.

• Introduction to exhibition design: purpose, types, and stakeholders.
• Design principles: balance, contrast, rhythm, and emphasis.
• Space planning: layout options, traffic flow, and accessibility.
• Branding and messaging: integrating client identity.
• Materials and finishes: selection criteria, durability, and aesthetics.
• Sustainability in exhibition design: eco-friendly practices.
• Case studies of successful exhibitions.
• Group discussion: identifying design challenges.

Day 2: Conceptualisation and Design Development

Objectives:
• Develop a design brief from client requirements.
• Generate creative concepts and mood boards.
• Apply sketching and visualisation techniques.
• Use digital tools for 2D and 3D design development.

• Analysing the design brief: objectives, budget, and constraints.
• Brainstorming and concept generation techniques.
• Creating mood boards and visual references.
• Sketching: hand-drawn and digital methods.
• Introduction to CAD and 3D modelling software.
• Developing floor plans, elevations, and perspective views.
• Peer review: presenting and critiquing concepts.

Day 3: Technical Detailing and Production Planning

• Create detailed technical drawings and specifications.
• Understand construction methods and structural integrity.
• Plan for lighting, audio-visual, and interactive elements.
• Develop production timelines and cost estimates.

• Technical drawings: dimensions, annotations, and assembly instructions.
• Structural considerations: load-bearing, safety, and modular systems.
• Lighting design: types, placement, and effects.
• Audio-visual integration: screens, speakers, and interactive kiosks.
• Graphics production: signage, banners, and digital displays.
• Project planning: scheduling, milestones, and resource allocation.
• Budgeting: materials, labour, and contingency.
• Health and safety regulations in exhibition construction.

Day 4: Implementation and On-Site Management

Objectives:
• Manage the installation process from delivery to completion.
• Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and client teams.
• Implement quality control and troubleshooting procedures.
• Ensure compliance with venue regulations and safety standards.

Topics:
• Pre-installation checks: logistics, permits, and site survey.
• Installation workflow: sequencing, rigging, and assembly.
• Contractor management: communication, schedules, and deliverables.
• Quality control: inspecting finishes, lighting, and AV functionality.
• Troubleshooting common on-site issues.
• Venue compliance: fire safety, load limits, and access.
• Client walkthroughs and final approvals.
• Documentation: as-built drawings and handover reports.

Day 5: Evaluation, Dismantling, and Professional Practice

Objectives:
• Evaluate exhibition success against design objectives.
• Plan and execute dismantling and post-event logistics.
• Understand client feedback and continuous improvement.
• Explore career pathways and industry trends in exhibition design.

Topics:
• Post-event evaluation: visitor feedback, data collection, and KPIs.
• Dismantling procedures: safe removal, waste management, and storage.
• Client debrief: reporting and recommendations.
• Professional practice: portfolios, networking, and certifications.
• Emerging trends: virtual exhibitions, immersive technology, and hybrid events.
• SAQA alignment: unit standard 117522 assessment criteria.
• Final assessment: presentation of a complete exhibition design project.
• Course wrap-up and certification.

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
