Description

This course equips learners with a comprehensive understanding of FIDIC contracts, enabling them to effectively manage and administer construction and engineering contracts. Participants will gain the skills to interpret contract clauses, handle claims and variations, and ensure compliance with contractual obligations, fostering successful project delivery.

Target Audience

This course is designed for project managers, contract administrators, engineers, quantity surveyors, and legal professionals involved in the preparation, management, or oversight of FIDIC-based contracts.

Prerequisites

A basic understanding of construction or engineering projects is recommended. No formal qualifications required.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to FIDIC Contracts and Key Principles

Objectives:
• Understand the history and purpose of FIDIC contracts
• Identify the different FIDIC contract forms (Red, Yellow, Silver, Green, Pink, Gold)
• Explain the key principles of risk allocation and contractor obligations
• Describe the roles of the Engineer, Employer, and Contractor
• Recognise the importance of the contract documents and their hierarchy

• The FIDIC Rainbow Suite: Red, Yellow, Silver, Green, Pink, Gold Books
• Key definitions and interpretations
• General provisions and contract structure
• Risk allocation: Employer vs. Contractor risks

• Contract documents and priority order
• Introduction to the Conditions of Contract

Day 2: Contractor’s Obligations and Time Management

Objectives:
• Analyse the Contractor’s general obligations under FIDIC
• Understand the programme, milestones, and delay provisions
• Explain variations and adjustments to the contract
• Identify rights and obligations regarding subcontracting
• Apply procedures for extensions of time and delay damages

• Commencement, delays, and suspension (Clause 8)
• Extensions of time (Clause 8.4)
• Delay damages and bonus for early completion
• Variations and adjustments (Clause 13)

• Employer’s obligations and facilities

Day 3: Quality, Testing, and Defects Liability

Objectives:
• Understand quality assurance and inspection requirements
• Explain testing procedures and rejection of work
• Describe the defects liability period and correction of defects
• Apply provisions for taking over and performance certificates
• Identify procedures for unfulfilled obligations and clearance of site

• Taking over the works and sections (Clause 10)
• Defects liability period (Clause 11)
• Correction of defects and cost allocation

Day 4: Payment, Claims, and Dispute Resolution

Objectives:
• Calculate and certify interim and final payments
• Understand the claims procedure and substantiation
• Explain the role of the Engineer in claims assessment
• Describe dispute resolution mechanisms (DAB, amicable settlement, arbitration)
• Apply procedures for variations and adjustments to contract price

• Final payment and retention money
• Contractor’s claims (Clause 20.1)
• Employer’s claims and set-off
• Dispute Adjudication Board (DAB) (Clause 20)

Day 5: Advanced Topics, Contract Management, and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Manage contract administration and documentation
• Handle suspension and termination procedures
• Apply insurance and force majeure provisions
• Integrate FIDIC with local legislation and procurement
• Develop a contract management plan and review case studies

• Suspension and termination (Clauses 15, 16, 19)
• Insurance requirements (Clause 18)
• Force majeure and exceptional events (Clause 19)
• Contractor’s and Employer’s risks revisited

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
