This course provides a comprehensive understanding of energy sources, the global energy landscape, and the transition towards sustainable energy systems. Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Energy and Sustainability

Objectives:
• Define energy, its forms, and units of measurement.
• Explain the concept of energy transition and its drivers.
• Identify global and South African energy challenges.
• Describe the relationship between energy use and climate change.

Topics:
• Introduction to energy: forms, sources, and conversions
• Energy units and measurements (Joules, kWh, etc.)
• Overview of global energy landscape and trends
• Drivers of energy transition: climate change, resource depletion, policy
• South African energy context: coal dependence, load shedding, renewable targets
• Sustainability principles and the triple bottom line

Day 2: Conventional Energy Sources and Their Impacts

Objectives:
• Describe the extraction, conversion, and use of fossil fuels.
• Analyze the environmental and social impacts of conventional energy.
• Understand the role of nuclear energy in the energy mix.
• Evaluate the limitations of traditional energy systems.

Topics:
• Fossil fuels: coal, oil, and natural gas – reserves, extraction, and combustion
• Electricity generation from fossil fuels: power plant basics
• Environmental impacts: air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, water use
• Social and economic impacts: health, mining communities, energy poverty
• Nuclear energy: principles, safety, waste management
• Limitations of conventional energy: depletion, inefficiency, externalities

Day 3: Renewable Energy Technologies

Objectives:
• Explain the principles of solar, wind, hydro, and biomass energy.
• Describe how each technology converts natural resources into electricity.
• Compare the advantages and challenges of different renewables.
• Identify suitable applications for each technology in South Africa.

Topics:
• Solar energy: photovoltaic and concentrated solar power
• Wind energy: onshore and offshore wind turbines
• Hydropower: large-scale and small-scale systems
• Biomass and bioenergy: feedstocks, combustion, biogas
• Geothermal and ocean energy: basics and potential
• Integration of renewables into the grid: intermittency, storage, and smart grids
• South African renewable energy projects and IPP programme

Day 4: Energy Storage, Efficiency, and Policy

Objectives:
• Understand the role of energy storage in enabling renewables.
• Describe energy efficiency measures in industry, buildings, and transport.
• Analyze energy policies and regulations in South Africa.
• Evaluate the economic and social dimensions of energy transition.

Topics:
• Energy storage technologies: batteries, pumped hydro, hydrogen
• Electric vehicles and their impact on energy systems
• Energy efficiency: lighting, HVAC, motors, and industrial processes
• Demand-side management and smart metering
• South African energy policy: IRP, NERSA, and carbon tax
• Just transition: job creation, community engagement, and equity
• Carbon markets and emissions trading

Day 5: Practical Integration and Future Outlook

Objectives:
• Synthesize knowledge to design a simple energy transition plan.
• Evaluate case studies of successful energy transitions.
• Discuss emerging technologies and future trends.
• Present a group project on a local energy transition scenario.

Topics:
• Case studies: Germany's Energiewende, South Africa's REIPPP
• Emerging technologies: green hydrogen, advanced nuclear, tidal power
• Energy modeling and scenario planning
• Group project: develop a transition roadmap for a South African municipality
• Presentation and peer review
• Course wrap-up and assessment

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Practical sessions reinforce theoretical concepts through hands-on activities. Learners will measure energy consumption, analyze renewable energy data, and simulate energy system operations using software tools and simple hardware.

Practical Activities
  • Energy Audit and Measurement — Learners conduct an energy audit of a simulated building using meters and data loggers, measuring electricity use of appliances and lighting. (4h)
  • Solar PV System Sizing and Simulation — Using a PV design software, learners size a solar PV system for a given load profile and location, then simulate its performance. (4h)
  • Wind Turbine Performance Analysis — Learners analyze wind speed data and use a small-scale wind turbine model to measure power output under different wind conditions. (4h)
  • Energy Transition Scenario Planning — Using a spreadsheet model, learners create a 10-year energy transition plan for a town, balancing demand, renewables, storage, and costs. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.

  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
