Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to inspect and test HVAC systems in commercial and industrial settings. Emphasis is placed on safety procedures, system performance verification, and compliance with South African standards.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to HVAC Systems and Inspection Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Understand the basic principles of HVAC systems and their components.
• Identify common HVAC system types and configurations.
• Explain the purpose and scope of HVAC inspection and testing.
• Recognize relevant safety procedures and regulations.
• Describe the role of HVAC inspections in system performance and compliance.

Topics:
• Overview of HVAC systems: heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.
• Key components: compressors, condensers, evaporators, fans, ducts, controls.
• Types of HVAC systems: split, packaged, VRF, heat pumps, chillers.
• Introduction to HVAC inspection standards and codes (SANS 10147, SANS 10400).
• Safety practices: lockout/tagout, PPE, electrical safety.
• Inspection tools and equipment: multimeters, thermometers, pressure gauges.
• Documentation and reporting basics.
• Pre-inspection procedures and site assessment.

Day 2: Inspection Techniques and Electrical Testing

Objectives:
• Perform visual and mechanical inspections of HVAC components.
• Conduct electrical tests on motors, controls, and wiring.
• Interpret electrical schematics and diagrams.
• Identify common faults and defects in HVAC systems.
• Apply measurement techniques for voltage, current, and resistance.

Topics:
• Visual inspection of ductwork, insulation, and air filters.
• Mechanical inspection of fans, belts, pulleys, and bearings.
• Electrical safety and use of multimeters, clamp meters, and insulation testers.
• Testing motors: winding resistance, insulation resistance, run/start capacitors.
• Checking contactors, relays, and thermostats.
• Reading and interpreting electrical control diagrams.
• Identifying signs of overheating, corrosion, and wear.
• Recording inspection findings and defect classification.

Day 3: Refrigeration and Airflow Testing

Objectives:
• Measure and evaluate refrigeration system pressures and temperatures.
• Calculate superheat and subcooling to assess system performance.
• Conduct airflow measurements using anemometers and flow hoods.
• Diagnose common refrigeration and airflow issues.
• Understand the impact of refrigerant charge and airflow on efficiency.

Topics:
• Refrigeration cycle review: evaporation, compression, condensation, expansion.
• Using manifold gauges: high side, low side, saturation temperatures.
• Superheat and subcooling calculation and interpretation.
• Refrigerant types, environmental regulations, and leak detection.
• Airflow measurement techniques: traverse, capture hood, pitot tube.
• Static pressure measurement and duct system analysis.
• Checking evaporator and condenser coil condition.
• Troubleshooting low airflow, restricted lines, and improper charge.

Day 4: System Performance Evaluation and Diagnostics

Objectives:
• Evaluate overall HVAC system performance using key metrics.
• Conduct load calculations and compare to system capacity.
• Use diagnostic tools to identify performance degradation.
• Analyze trends in temperature, pressure, and power consumption.
• Prepare comprehensive performance reports.

Topics:
• Performance metrics: EER, COP, SEER, and IPLV.
• Temperature split and approach temperature analysis.
• Load estimation: manual J or simplified methods.
• Power consumption measurement and kW/ton assessment.
• Using data loggers for temperature and humidity trends.
• Diagnostic procedures for common faults: short cycling, high head pressure.
• Indoor air quality testing: CO2, humidity, particulate.
• Reporting findings and recommending corrective actions.

Day 5: Advanced Testing, Commissioning, and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Apply advanced testing techniques for complex systems.
• Understand commissioning processes for new installations.
• Integrate all inspection and testing skills in a simulated scenario.
• Demonstrate proficiency in using diagnostic software and tools.
• Prepare a complete inspection report with recommendations.

Topics:
• Advanced diagnostics: vibration analysis, refrigerant analysis.
• Commissioning procedures: test and balance, functional testing.
• Building management system (BMS) integration and testing.
• Leak detection methods: electronic, ultrasonic, dye.
• Duct leakage testing and sealing verification.
• Review of case studies and common failure modes.
• Simulated inspection exercise: system walk-through, testing, reporting.
• Final assessment and certification requirements.

Overview

Hands-on practicals are integral to this course, allowing learners to apply inspection and testing techniques on real HVAC equipment. Learners will use tools such as multimeters, manifold gauges, anemometers, and data loggers to diagnose system performance and faults.

Practical Activities
  • Electrical Testing of HVAC Components — Learners perform electrical tests on motors, contactors, and control circuits using multimeters and insulation testers. (4h)
  • Refrigeration System Analysis — Learners connect manifold gauges, measure pressures and temperatures, and calculate superheat and subcooling on operating systems. (5h)
  • Airflow Measurement and Duct Testing — Learners use anemometers, flow hoods, and manometers to measure airflow and static pressure in duct systems. (4h)
  • Comprehensive System Inspection and Reporting — Learners conduct a full inspection of a simulated HVAC system, including visual checks, electrical tests, refrigeration analysis, and airflow measurement. (4h)
  • Diagnostic Troubleshooting Scenarios — Learners troubleshoot pre-set faults on HVAC equipment using diagnostic tools and logical problem-solving. (3h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
