Description

This course equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills to safely handle, recover, and dispose of refrigerants in compliance with South African environmental regulations and safety standards. It covers proper use of recovery equipment, leak detection, and documentation procedures to minimize environmental impact and ensure workplace safety.

Learning Outcomes

Target Audience

Technicians, engineers, and maintenance personnel involved in the installation, servicing, or decommissioning of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. No formal qualifications required.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Refrigerants and Environmental Impact

Objectives:
• Understand the role of refrigerants in HVAC&R systems
• Identify common refrigerant types and their environmental impact
• Explain the Montreal Protocol and F-Gas Regulations
• Recognise the importance of responsible refrigerant handling

Topics:
• Overview of the refrigeration cycle
• Types of refrigerants: CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs, HFOs, natural refrigerants
• Ozone depletion potential (ODP) and global warming potential (GWP)
• Legislation: Montreal Protocol, Kyoto Protocol, SA Ozone Protection Regulations
• Environmental and safety hazards of refrigerant leaks
• Principles of reduce, reuse, recover, recycle

Day 2: Refrigerant Handling Safety and Tools

Objectives:
• Apply personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety procedures
• Identify and use refrigerant handling tools and equipment
• Understand Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for refrigerants
• Perform safe cylinder handling and storage

Topics:
• PPE requirements: gloves, goggles, safety shoes, ventilation
• Handling tools: manifold gauges, recovery units, vacuum pumps, leak detectors
• Cylinder identification: colour codes, pressure ratings, valve types
• Safe transport and storage of refrigerant cylinders
• MSDS interpretation and emergency response
• First aid for refrigerant exposure

Day 3: Refrigerant Recovery Principles and Procedures

Objectives:
• Explain the recovery process and its importance
• Set up and operate recovery equipment correctly
• Perform recovery from different system types
• Calculate recovery efficiency and record data

Topics:
• Recovery vs recycling vs reclamation
• Recovery unit types: passive, active, self-contained
• System preparation: isolating, removing oil, clearing lines
• Step-by-step recovery procedure for split systems, chillers, and automotive AC
• Measuring recovered refrigerant: weight, pressure, temperature
• Documentation and reporting requirements

Day 4: Leak Detection and System Integrity

Objectives:
• Perform leak detection using various methods
• Evaluate system integrity and identify common leak points
• Apply proper evacuation and dehydration techniques
• Understand the role of system charging after recovery

Topics:
• Leak detection methods: electronic, ultrasonic, bubble, dye, halide torch
• Common leak points: joints, valves, seals, evaporators, condensers
• Evacuation theory: deep vacuum, triple evacuation
• Using vacuum pumps and micron gauges
• Recharging systems: liquid vs vapour charging, critical charge
• Record keeping for leak tests and repairs

Day 5: Compliance, Certification, and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Understand SAQA unit standard requirements for certification
• Apply knowledge in a simulated recovery and leak test scenario
• Complete required documentation and logbooks
• Prepare for the final assessment

• Overview of SAQA unit standard AATICD-0258
• Roles and responsibilities of certified handlers
• Environmental compliance and reporting
• Review of key procedures and safety protocols
• Mock assessment: recovery, leak detection, evacuation
• Final written and practical assessment

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practicals are essential to develop competence in refrigerant handling, recovery, leak detection, and system evacuation. Learners will operate recovery units, manifold gauges, vacuum pumps, and leak detectors under supervision, simulating real-world scenarios to meet the unit standard outcomes.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Safe Handling and Cylinder Management — Learners practice safe handling, transport, and storage of refrigerant cylinders, including proper use of PPE and identification of cylinder types. (3h)
  • Practical 2: Recovery Unit Setup and Operation — Learners set up and operate a recovery unit on a training rig, recovering refrigerant from a split system and a small chiller, and measuring recovered amounts. (5h)
  • Practical 3: Leak Detection and Repair — Using electronic and bubble leak detectors, learners locate simulated leaks on a pressurised system and perform basic repair procedures. (4h)
  • Practical 4: Evacuation and System Charging — Learners evacuate a system using a vacuum pump and micron gauge, then recharge with refrigerant to specified levels. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
