Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to identify, evaluate, and control occupational hygiene hazards in the workplace. It covers the principles of anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic stressors to protect worker health. Participants will learn to implement monitoring strategies and interpret exposure data to ensure compliance with South African occupational health legislation.

  • Apply the fundamental principles of occupational hygiene to identify and anticipate workplace hazards.
  • Evaluate exposure risks by selecting and using appropriate monitoring equipment for chemical, physical, and biological agents.
  • Analyze exposure data and compare results with occupational exposure limits (OELs) to determine compliance.
  • Design and implement control strategies, including hierarchy of controls, to mitigate identified risks.
  • Demonstrate the ability to conduct workplace assessments and produce comprehensive hygiene reports.
  • Implement legal and ethical requirements related to occupational hygiene in the South African context.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Occupational Hygiene

Objectives:
• Define occupational hygiene and its importance in the workplace
• Understand the scope and legal framework of occupational hygiene in South Africa
• Identify the basic principles of hazard recognition and risk assessment
• Recognise the roles and responsibilities of occupational hygiene practitioners

Topics:
• What is occupational hygiene? Historical perspective and modern relevance
• South African legislation: OHSA, COID, and relevant regulations
• The hierarchy of controls: elimination, substitution, engineering, administrative, PPE
• Introduction to health hazards: chemical, physical, biological, ergonomic
• Basic risk assessment concepts and terminology

Day 2: Chemical and Biological Hazard Recognition

Objectives:
• Identify common chemical hazards and their routes of entry
• Understand the use of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and hazard classification
• Describe biological hazards and their control measures
• Apply sampling strategies for airborne contaminants

Topics:
• Chemical hazards: dusts, fumes, gases, vapours, mists
• Occupational exposure limits (OELs) and their interpretation
• Biological hazards: bacteria, viruses, fungi, and endotoxins
• Sampling equipment and methods for air contaminants
• Introduction to exposure monitoring and measurement techniques

Day 3: Physical Hazards and Measurement

Objectives:
• Identify physical hazards: noise, vibration, thermal extremes, radiation
• Understand the principles of noise measurement and hearing conservation
• Describe the effects of vibration and thermal stress on health
• Apply measurement techniques for physical hazards

Topics:
• Noise: sources, health effects, measurement (dosimetry, sound level meters)
• Hearing conservation programmes
• Hand-arm and whole-body vibration: measurement and control
• Thermal environment: heat stress and cold stress assessment
• Non-ionising and ionising radiation: sources and protection

Day 4: Ergonomic and Psychosocial Hazards, Control Strategies

Objectives:
• Identify ergonomic risk factors and conduct basic ergonomic assessments
• Understand psychosocial hazards and their impact on worker health
• Apply engineering and administrative controls for hazard mitigation
• Develop a basic occupational hygiene management plan

Topics:
• Ergonomic hazards: repetitive motion, manual handling, workstation design
• Psychosocial hazards: stress, shift work, violence, workload
• Control banding and risk management approaches
• Personal protective equipment (PPE): selection, use, and maintenance
• Emergency preparedness and spill response

Day 5: Integrated Risk Management and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Synthesise knowledge to conduct a comprehensive workplace risk assessment
• Develop and present an occupational hygiene improvement plan
• Understand the role of occupational hygiene in overall health and safety management
• Evaluate case studies and apply lessons learned

Topics:
• Conducting a walk-through survey and hazard inventory
• Data interpretation and reporting
• Cost-benefit analysis of control measures
• Case studies: mining, manufacturing, healthcare, construction
• Professional ethics and continuing education

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Practical sessions reinforce theoretical concepts through hands-on use of monitoring equipment, sampling techniques, and risk assessment exercises. Learners will gain confidence in applying occupational hygiene principles to real-world scenarios.

Practical Activities
  • Air Sampling and Monitoring — Learners use personal and area sampling pumps, calibrate them, and collect samples for airborne contaminants (e.g., dust, vapours). (4h)
  • Noise and Vibration Measurement — Learners measure noise levels using sound level meters and dosimeters, and assess hand-arm vibration using a vibration meter. (4h)
  • Ergonomic Risk Assessment — Learners perform a basic ergonomic assessment using tools like RULA, REBA, or NIOSH lifting equation on simulated workstations. (4h)
  • Integrated Workplace Risk Assessment — In groups, learners conduct a walk-through survey of a simulated workplace, identify hazards, measure exposures, and present a risk assessment report. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
