Description

This course equips participants with the skills to design, implement, and manage IT disaster recovery plans that ensure business continuity. Learners will evaluate risks, develop recovery strategies, and conduct testing to minimize downtime and data loss. The course aligns with industry best practices and South African regulatory requirements.

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyze organizational IT risks and critical systems to prioritize recovery objectives.
  • Design a comprehensive IT disaster recovery plan aligned with business continuity goals.
  • Implement recovery strategies for data, applications, and network infrastructure.
  • Evaluate disaster recovery plan effectiveness through testing and simulation exercises.
  • Demonstrate compliance with relevant legal, regulatory, and industry standards.
  • Apply continuous improvement processes to update and maintain the disaster recovery plan.

Target Audience

IT managers, systems administrators, and business continuity professionals responsible for protecting organizational data and IT infrastructure. Also suitable for consultants and team leads involved in disaster recovery planning.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, basic familiarity with IT infrastructure and business operations is advantageous.

Day 1: Foundations of IT Disaster Recovery Planning

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and importance of IT disaster recovery planning.
• Identify key concepts: disaster, business continuity, recovery point objective (RPO), recovery time objective (RTO).
• Differentiate between disaster recovery, business continuity, and incident response.
• Recognise relevant South African legislation and standards (e.g., POPIA, COBIT, ISO 22301).
• Assess common threats and risks to IT systems in a South African context.

Topics:
• Introduction to IT Disaster Recovery Planning
• Key terminology: RPO, RTO, MTD, RLO
• Relationship between DR, BC, and Incident Response
• Legal and regulatory requirements in South Africa (POPIA, King IV)
• Risk assessment fundamentals
• Threat landscape: natural, human, technical
• Business impact analysis (BIA) basics
• Case study: impact of a regional power outage

Day 2: Risk Assessment and Business Impact Analysis

Objectives:
• Conduct a basic risk assessment for IT assets.
• Perform a business impact analysis (BIA) to identify critical functions and dependencies.
• Determine RPO and RTO for different systems.
• Prioritise recovery efforts based on business needs.
• Document findings in a risk register.

Topics:
• Risk assessment methodologies (qualitative vs quantitative)
• Asset inventory and classification
• Threat identification and vulnerability assessment
• Business impact analysis process
• Identifying critical business functions and dependencies
• Defining RPO and RTO for IT services
• Risk treatment options: avoid, transfer, mitigate, accept
• Documenting risks and BIA results

Day 3: Developing Recovery Strategies

Objectives:
• Select appropriate recovery strategies for different IT systems.
• Design backup solutions and data replication methods.
• Plan for alternative sites (hot, warm, cold) and cloud-based recovery.
• Outline communication and escalation procedures during a disaster.
• Align strategies with organisational budget and risk appetite.

Topics:
• Recovery strategy options: backup, replication, failover, cloud DR
• Backup types: full, incremental, differential
• Storage media and offsite considerations
• Alternative site types: hot, warm, cold, mobile
• Cloud disaster recovery (DRaaS)
• Communication plan and crisis management team roles
• Vendor and service provider management
• Cost-benefit analysis of strategies

Day 4: Plan Development and Documentation

Objectives:
• Draft a comprehensive IT disaster recovery plan (DRP).
• Include procedures for detection, response, recovery, and restoration.
• Define roles and responsibilities within the DR team.
• Ensure the plan covers legal and compliance requirements.
• Review and validate plan components through tabletop exercises.

Topics:
• DRP structure and components (ISO 22301 framework)
• Incident detection and declaration procedures
• Response and escalation steps
• Recovery procedures for systems, networks, and data
• Restoration and return to normal operations
• Roles and responsibilities matrix
• Documentation standards and version control
• Tabletop exercise: walkthrough of a scenario

Day 5: Testing, Maintenance, and Continuous Improvement

Objectives:
• Test the DRP using various methods (walkthroughs, simulations, full tests).
• Analyse test results and identify gaps.
• Implement a maintenance schedule for plan updates.
• Align DRP with organisational change management.
• Prepare for independent audit and certification.

Topics:
• Testing types: checklist, tabletop, simulation, parallel, full interruption
• Measuring test success: RTO/RPO achievement
• Gap analysis and corrective action plans
• DRP maintenance triggers: infrastructure changes, new threats, regulations
• Integration with change management processes
• Continuous improvement cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act)
• Audit readiness and compliance evidence
• Course review and final assessment

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Learners apply DR planning concepts through hands-on exercises including risk assessment, strategy selection, plan drafting, and simulation testing. These practicals ensure learners can operationalise the theory into a usable disaster recovery plan.

Practical Activities
  • Risk Assessment and BIA Workshop — Learners perform a risk assessment and business impact analysis on a case study organisation, identifying critical assets and determining RPO/RTO. (4h)
  • Recovery Strategy Design Exercise — Learners design recovery strategies (backup, replication, alternative sites) for different systems and justify cost-benefit decisions. (4h)
  • DRP Drafting and Documentation — Learners draft a full disaster recovery plan based on the previous exercises, including procedures, roles, and communication plans. (4h)
  • Tabletop Simulation and Test Evaluation — Learners participate in a tabletop simulation of a disaster scenario, then analyse test results and propose improvements. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
