IT Disaster Recovery Planning Training

SAQA US AATICD-0103 | NQF 5 | Credits 10 | Duration 5 Days
From $1,242 per delegate

Description

This course equips IT professionals with the skills to design, implement, and manage disaster recovery plans that ensure business continuity. Participants will learn to assess risks, develop recovery strategies, and test plans to minimise downtime and data loss. The course aligns with industry best practices and South African regulatory requirements.

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyse organisational IT infrastructure to identify vulnerabilities and potential disaster scenarios.
  • Design a comprehensive IT disaster recovery plan that aligns with business continuity objectives.
  • Implement recovery strategies for critical systems, data, and networks.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of disaster recovery plans through testing and exercises.
  • Apply best practices for backup, replication, and failover procedures.
  • Demonstrate compliance with relevant legislation and standards (e.g., POPIA, ISO 22301).

Target Audience

IT managers, systems administrators, network engineers, and business continuity coordinators responsible for safeguarding organisational IT infrastructure.

Prerequisites

Basic understanding of IT infrastructure and networking concepts. Prior exposure to business continuity principles is beneficial but not required.

• Risk assessment techniques (qualitative and quantitative)
• Threat modelling: natural, technical, human threats
• Determining RTO and RPO for each system
• Dependency mapping and single points of failure
• Documenting BIA results
• Practical exercise: Conduct a mini-BIA

Day 3: Developing the Disaster Recovery Plan

Objectives:
• Structure a comprehensive DR plan document
• Define recovery strategies for different scenarios
• Design backup and replication strategies
• Establish communication and escalation procedures
• Integrate DR plan with organisational policies

Topics:
• DR plan components: scope, assumptions, roles
• Recovery strategies: hot, warm, cold sites; cloud DR
• Backup strategies: full, incremental, differential, offsite
• Data replication: synchronous vs asynchronous
• Communication plan: stakeholders, media, staff
• Escalation and notification procedures
• Plan maintenance and version control
• Practical exercise: Draft a DR plan section

Day 4: Testing, Maintenance, and Incident Response

Objectives:
• Plan and execute DR tests (tabletop, simulation, full)
• Analyse test results and implement improvements
• Establish DR plan maintenance schedule
• Integrate DR with incident response (IR) processes
• Understand post-incident review and lessons learned

Topics:
• Types of DR tests: tabletop, walkthrough, simulation, parallel, full
• Test planning, execution, and documentation
• Analysing test results: gap analysis, corrective actions
• DR plan maintenance: change management, periodic reviews
• Incident response lifecycle and DR integration
• Post-incident review and continuous improvement
• Compliance audit considerations
• Practical exercise: Conduct a tabletop DR exercise

Day 5: Governance, Vendor Management, and Final Integration

Objectives:

• Integrate DR planning with enterprise risk management
• Present a complete DR plan for executive approval

Topics:
• Governance: DR policies, steering committees, roles
• Vendor management: cloud providers, colocation, SLA reviews
• DR metrics: RTO/RPO compliance, test frequency, costs
• Reporting to management and board
• Integration with enterprise risk management (ERM)
• Emerging trends: cyber resilience, disaster recovery as code
• Final project: Present DR plan summary
• Course review and assessment

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practicals reinforce DR concepts through simulated scenarios. Learners conduct a mini-BIA, draft a DR plan section, and execute a tabletop exercise, building confidence to apply DR planning in real-world settings.

Practical Activities
  • Mini Business Impact Analysis — Learners work in groups to identify critical IT systems, determine RTOs and RPOs, and document dependencies for a case study organisation. (4h)
  • Drafting a DR Plan Section — Learners draft a recovery strategy section of a DR plan, including backup procedures, roles, and communication steps for a given scenario. (4h)
  • Tabletop DR Exercise — Learners participate in a facilitated tabletop exercise simulating a cyberattack, testing decision-making, communication, and plan adherence. (4h)
  • DR Plan Presentation and Review — Teams present their DR plan sections and exercise findings to the class, receiving peer and instructor feedback for refinement. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
