Aircrew Aircraft Operations at Aerodrome Training

SAQA US 243286 | NQF 6 | Credits 5 | Duration 2 Days
From $832 per delegate

Description

This course equips aircrew personnel with the competencies required to perform aircraft operations at an aerodrome safely and efficiently. Learners will gain practical skills in aircraft movement, communication, and adherence to aerodrome procedures, ensuring compliance with South African civil aviation regulations.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply standard operating procedures for aircraft movement on the apron and taxiways.
  • Demonstrate effective communication using aerodrome radio telephony procedures.
  • Analyze potential hazards and implement safety measures during aircraft ground operations.
  • Evaluate aerodrome markings, signs, and lighting to ensure safe aircraft positioning.
  • Implement emergency response actions in accordance with aerodrome emergency plans.

Target Audience

This course is designed for aspiring and current aircrew members, including flight attendants, pilots, and ground crew, who need to operate effectively within an aerodrome environment.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment

Course Outline

Day 1: Aerodrome Environment and Aircraft Operations Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Understand the layout, markings, and lighting of aerodromes.
• Identify roles and responsibilities of aircrew during ground operations.
• Describe standard communication procedures and phraseology.
• Explain safety protocols and hazard awareness on the aerodrome.

Topics:
• Aerodrome classification and components (runway, taxiway, apron).
• Visual aids: markings, signs, and lighting systems.
• Aircrew duties: pre-flight, taxi, take-off, landing, and parking.
• Radio telephony procedures and standard phraseology.
• Ground safety: marshalling, foreign object debris (FOD), and vehicle operations.
• Aerodrome emergency procedures and equipment.
• Human factors: situational awareness and decision-making.

Day 2: Advanced Operations, Emergencies, and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Apply procedures for non-normal and emergency situations.
• Coordinate with air traffic control and ground services.
• Demonstrate proficiency in aerodrome-specific operations.
• Integrate knowledge through simulated scenarios.

Topics:
• Low visibility operations and instrument approach procedures.
• Engine start, taxi, and run-up procedures.
• Wake turbulence avoidance and separation minima.
• Emergency scenarios: engine failure, rejected take-off, and evacuation.
• Aerodrome lighting malfunctions and alternate procedures.
• Coordination with ground handling: fueling, boarding, and de-icing.
• Crew resource management (CRM) in aerodrome operations.

Practicals

6 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Practical sessions reinforce theoretical knowledge through simulated aerodrome operations. Learners practice radio communication, taxi procedures, and emergency drills in a controlled environment to build competence and confidence.

Practical Activities
  • Radio Telephony and Communication — Learners practice standard phraseology and communication with ATC using simulator or role-play scenarios. (2h)
  • Taxi and Ground Movement — Simulated taxi exercises to navigate aerodrome markings, signs, and lighting. (2h)
  • Emergency Procedures Drill — Simulated emergency scenarios including engine failure, rejected take-off, and evacuation. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
