Aviation Safety Principles Analysis and Application Training

SAQA US 243278 | NQF 6 | Credits 5 | Duration 2 Days
From $832 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the competence to analyse and apply safety principles within the aviation industry. Participants will develop the ability to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement effective safety measures in accordance with regulatory requirements. The course promotes a proactive safety culture to enhance operational integrity and reduce incidents.

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyse the principles of aviation safety management systems.
  • Apply hazard identification and risk assessment techniques in aviation contexts.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of safety controls and mitigation strategies.
  • Demonstrate understanding of regulatory frameworks and industry standards.
  • Implement safety promotion and communication strategies within an organisation.
  • Investigate and report on safety incidents using structured methodologies.

Target Audience

This course is designed for aviation safety officers, ground crew supervisors, flight operations staff, and quality assurance personnel seeking to deepen their understanding of safety management systems. It is also suitable for individuals preparing for roles in aviation safety compliance.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Aviation Safety Principles

Objectives:
• Understand the historical evolution and importance of aviation safety.
• Identify key safety principles and regulatory frameworks.
• Explain the concept of safety culture and its impact on aviation operations.
• Recognize common aviation hazards and risk factors.

Topics:
• History of aviation safety and major accidents.
• International and South African regulatory bodies (ICAO, SACAA).
• Fundamental safety principles: hazard identification, risk assessment, and mitigation.
• Safety management systems (SMS) overview.
• Human factors in aviation safety.
• Safety culture and just culture concepts.
• Introduction to accident causation models (e.g., Swiss Cheese Model).
• Case study: Lessons from historical aviation accidents.

Day 2: Analysis, Application, and Safety Management Systems

Objectives:
• Apply risk assessment techniques to aviation scenarios.
• Analyze safety data and identify trends.
• Develop and implement safety management system components.
• Evaluate safety performance and propose improvements.

Topics:
• Detailed risk assessment methodologies (e.g., Bowtie, FMEA).
• Safety data collection and analysis (flight data monitoring, reports).
• SMS components: policy, risk management, assurance, promotion.
• Emergency response planning.
• Safety audits and inspections.
• Practical application: conducting a risk assessment.
• Safety performance indicators and measurement.
• Continuous improvement and safety culture enhancement.

Practicals

6 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Practical sessions reinforce theoretical safety principles through hands-on risk assessment exercises, safety data analysis, and SMS documentation tasks. Learners apply concepts to real-world aviation scenarios, developing skills in hazard identification, risk mitigation, and safety reporting.

Practical Activities
  • Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment Exercise — Learners work in groups to identify hazards from a given aviation scenario (e.g., ground operations) and perform a risk assessment using a structured methodology (e.g., Bowtie). (2h)
  • Safety Data Analysis and Reporting — Using simulated safety data (e.g., incident reports, flight data), learners analyze trends and compile a safety performance report. (2h)
  • SMS Documentation and Emergency Response Plan Development — Learners develop key SMS documents (e.g., safety policy, emergency response plan) for a fictional aviation organization, then present and defend their plans. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
