The training prepares pilots to handle complex flight scenarios with precision and confidence.

Target Audience

This course is designed for commercial pilots who hold or are working towards a multi-crew pilot licence (MPL) or type rating, and who need to demonstrate competency in multi-pilot aeroplane manoeuvres.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Multi-Pilot Operations

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of crew resource management (CRM).
• Explain the roles and responsibilities of pilot flying and pilot monitoring.
• Describe standard operating procedures for multi-pilot aeroplanes.
• Identify communication protocols and call-outs.

• Introduction to multi-pilot operations and CRM.
• Crew roles: pilot flying vs pilot monitoring.
• Standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Communication and coordination techniques.
• Threat and error management (TEM).
• Briefing techniques.

Day 2: Pre-Flight and Departure Manoeuvres

Objectives:
• Execute thorough pre-flight inspections and cockpit setup.
• Perform engine start and taxi procedures in a multi-pilot environment.
• Conduct take-off and initial climb manoeuvres with crew coordination.
• Apply departure procedures and departure stall recovery.

Day 3: En-Route Manoeuvres and Emergencies

Objectives:
• Manage en-route flight operations including altitude changes and turns.
• Handle in-flight emergencies such as engine failure and fire.
• Perform emergency descent and diversion procedures.
• Practice crew coordination during abnormal situations.

• En-route navigation and altitude management.
• Steep turns and unusual attitude recovery.
• Engine failure procedures.
• Fire and smoke drills.

Day 4: Approach and Landing Manoeuvres

Objectives:
• Execute instrument approach procedures with crew coordination.
• Perform visual approach and landing in various conditions.
• Conduct go-around and missed approach procedures.
• Handle landing emergencies such as wind shear and rejected landing.

Topics:
• Instrument approach procedures (ILS, VOR, NDB).
• Visual approach and landing techniques.
• Go-around and missed approach.
• Crosswind landing and wind shear recovery.
• Rejected landing and balked landing.
• Landing with system failures.
• Crew coordination during approach.
• Stabilised approach criteria.

Day 5: Integrated Scenarios and Assessment

Objectives:
• Apply all skills in integrated multi-pilot scenarios.
• Demonstrate effective CRM in complex situations.
• Conduct full-flight profile from pre-flight to shutdown.
• Complete competency assessment for in-flight manoeuvres.

• Full-flight scenario simulation.

Practicals

Overview

Practical sessions involve hands-on flight simulator training where learners practice multi-pilot manoeuvres and crew coordination. These sessions are essential to develop proficiency in operating multi-pilot aeroplanes and managing in-flight situations.

Practical Activities
  • Simulator Session 1: Pre-Flight and Departure — Learners practice cockpit setup, engine start, taxi, take-off, and departure procedures in a multi-pilot simulator. (5h)
  • Simulator Session 2: En-Route Manoeuvres and Emergencies — Learners practice en-route manoeuvres, including steep turns, unusual attitude recovery, and emergency procedures like engine failure. (5h)
  • Simulator Session 3: Approach and Landing — Learners practice instrument and visual approaches, landings, go-around, and landing emergencies. (5h)
  • Simulator Session 4: Integrated Full-Flight Scenario — Learners fly a complete flight scenario from pre-flight to shutdown, incorporating multiple abnormal situations. (5h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
