Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills to safely and effectively conduct maritime rigging operations. It covers the selection, inspection, and use of rigging equipment, load calculations, and adherence to relevant safety regulations. Successful completion enables learners to perform rigging tasks in a maritime environment with due regard for safety and operational efficiency.

Target Audience

This course is designed for riggers, deck crew, and maritime personnel who are responsible for lifting and moving heavy loads on ships, offshore platforms, or in port environments. It is also suitable for supervisors seeking to enhance their understanding of safe rigging practices.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, learners should be physically fit and able to work at heights.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Maritime Rigging and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the legal and regulatory framework for maritime rigging.
• Identify common rigging equipment and their specifications.
• Explain the importance of safety in rigging operations.
• Recognise hazards and apply risk assessment principles.
• Demonstrate knowledge of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Topics:
• Overview of SAQA unit standard 119844 and relevant legislation.
• Types of rigging equipment: slings, shackles, hooks, wire ropes, and chains.
• Load capacity and safe working load (SWL) concepts.
• Hazard identification and risk assessment in rigging.
• PPE requirements and inspection procedures.
• Safety signs, signals, and communication protocols.
• Introduction to rigging plans and documentation.
• Case studies of rigging incidents and lessons learned.

Day 2: Rigging Hardware and Inspection Techniques

Objectives:
• Describe the characteristics and uses of different rigging hardware.
• Perform pre-use inspection of rigging equipment.
• Identify defects and determine equipment serviceability.
• Apply proper storage and maintenance procedures.
• Calculate loads and determine appropriate rigging configurations.

Topics:
• Detailed study of wire rope construction, lay, and end terminations.
• Synthetic slings: types, ratings, and inspection criteria.
• Shackles, hooks, turnbuckles, and eye bolts: selection and inspection.
• Chain slings: grades, wear limits, and certification.
• Load calculation exercises: weight estimation and centre of gravity.
• Inspection checklists and record-keeping.
• Hands-on practical: equipment inspection and tagging.
• Maintenance and storage best practices.

Day 3: Lifting Principles and Rigging Configurations

Objectives:
• Explain basic physics of lifting: forces, angles, and tension.
• Configure slings for different lift types (vertical, choker, basket).
• Determine sling angles and their effect on load capacity.
• Apply hitches and reeving techniques.
• Plan and set up a simple lifting operation.

Topics:
• Mechanical principles: leverage, centre of gravity, and stability.
• Sling angle factor calculations and capacity reduction.
• Types of hitches: vertical, bridle, choker, and basket.
• Multi-leg bridle configurations and load distribution.
• Tag lines and load control techniques.
• Hand signals and communication during lifts.
• Practical exercise: rigging a load for a simulated lift.
• Introduction to lifting gear certification and colour coding.

Day 4: Advanced Rigging Operations and Equipment

Objectives:
• Operate winches, hoists, and cranes in a rigging context.
• Perform tandem lifts and complex load handling.
• Understand critical lifts and lift planning.
• Apply safe rigging practices for offshore and marine environments.
• Conduct dynamic load testing and proof loading.

Topics:
• Winch and hoist types: hand, electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic.
• Crane signals and communication with crane operators.
• Tandem and multi-crane lifts: planning and execution.
• Offshore rigging considerations: corrosion, motion, and weather.
• Critical lift plans and permit-to-work systems.
• Dynamic and static load testing procedures.
• Practical: rigging a load using winch and hoist.
• Emergency procedures for rigging failures.

Day 5: Integrated Practical Assessment and Certification

Objectives:
• Demonstrate competency in planning and executing a rigging operation.
• Conduct final inspection and certification of rigging equipment.
• Complete a comprehensive lift plan.
• Perform a simulated complex lift under supervision.
• Apply all safety and regulatory requirements.

Topics:
• Review of key concepts and Q&A session.
• Practical assessment: plan and execute a multi-stage lift.
• Equipment inspection and certification documentation.
• Lift plan submission and review.
• Simulated emergency response scenario.
• Final written assessment (if required).
• Feedback and individual coaching.
• Issue of certificates of competence.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
