Fishing Net Maintenance Deployment Retrieval Techniques Training

SAQA US 114005 | NQF 3 | Credits 8 | Duration 5 Days
From $1,242 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the skills to maintain, deploy, and retrieve fishing nets effectively, ensuring operational efficiency and safety in fishing environments. Participants will gain hands-on techniques for net inspection, repair, and proper handling to minimize downtime and environmental impact.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate proper techniques for inspecting fishing nets for damage and wear.
  • Apply correct methods for repairing common net damages such as tears and broken mesh.
  • Implement safe deployment procedures to ensure net integrity and crew safety.
  • Evaluate retrieval techniques to minimize net entanglement and catch loss.
  • Design a maintenance schedule to extend net lifespan and reduce operational costs.
  • Analyze environmental factors affecting net performance and adjust techniques accordingly.

Target Audience

This course is designed for fishing crew members, net technicians, and fisheries managers who are involved in the handling, maintenance, and deployment of fishing nets in commercial or artisanal fishing operations.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Fishing Nets and Maintenance Principles

Objectives:
• Understand the types and components of fishing nets
• Identify common wear and tear issues
• Learn the principles of net maintenance
• Recognize safety protocols for net handling

Topics:
• Overview of fishing net types (gillnets, trawls, purse seines)
• Net components: mesh, twine, floats, ropes, leads
• Common damage: tears, abrasion, UV degradation
• Maintenance principles: inspection, cleaning, repair
• Safety procedures when handling nets

Day 2: Net Inspection and Repair Techniques

Objectives:
• Conduct systematic net inspections
• Perform basic net repairs using tools and materials
• Identify when professional repair is needed
• Document inspection findings

Topics:
• Inspection methods: visual, tactile, tension testing
• Tools and materials for repair: needles, twine, patches
• Repair techniques: mending tears, replacing mesh panels
• Knot tying for net repair
• Record keeping for maintenance logs

Day 3: Net Deployment Techniques

Objectives:
• Understand deployment methods for different net types
• Set up nets correctly for various fishing scenarios
• Manage deployment safely and efficiently
• Troubleshoot common deployment issues

Topics:
• Deployment methods: setting gillnets, shooting trawls, purse seining
• Rigging nets: attaching floats, weights, and lines
• Depth and current considerations
• Safety during deployment: crew coordination, equipment checks
• Common problems: tangling, snagging, misalignment

Day 4: Net Retrieval and Handling

Objectives:
• Execute safe and efficient net retrieval
• Handle nets post-retrieval to minimize damage
• Sort catch and disentangle nets
• Perform on-deck maintenance during retrieval

Topics:
• Retrieval methods: hauling, winching, power blocks
• Handling techniques: clearing catch, folding nets
• On-deck inspection and minor repairs
• Catch sorting and bycatch reduction
• Storage procedures to prevent damage

Day 5: Advanced Maintenance and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Apply advanced repair techniques (e.g., hanging ratios)
• Integrate maintenance, deployment, and retrieval skills
• Develop a net maintenance schedule
• Demonstrate proficiency in all techniques

Topics:
• Advanced repairs: replacing selvedges, adjusting mesh size
• Hanging ratios and net balance
• Creating a maintenance schedule
• Integration of deployment and retrieval with maintenance
• Final assessment of practical skills

Practicals

20 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are essential for learners to develop proficiency in net inspection, repair, deployment, and retrieval. These sessions simulate real-world conditions, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge and build muscle memory for safe and efficient operations.

Practical Activities
  • Net Inspection and Repair Practical — Learners inspect damaged net panels, identify defects, and perform repairs using needles and twine. (6h)
  • Net Deployment Practical — Learners set up and deploy a gillnet and a trawl net in a controlled environment, focusing on rigging and safety. (5h)
  • Net Retrieval and Handling Practical — Learners retrieve deployed nets, clear catch, and perform on-deck inspection and minor repairs. (5h)
  • Integrated Practical Assessment — Learners demonstrate end-to-end skills: inspect, repair, deploy, retrieve, and perform post-retrieval maintenance on a net. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
