Trawl Maintenance Deployment And Retrieval For Fishing Operations Training

SAQA US 113985 | NQF 3 | Credits 8 | Duration 5 Days
From $1,242 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely and effectively deploy, maintain, and retrieve trawling nets and associated gear during fishing operations. It covers routine inspection, repair techniques, and adherence to safety protocols to minimize operational downtime and ensure compliance with maritime regulations.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate correct procedures for inspecting trawl nets and gear before deployment to identify wear, damage, or defects.
  • Apply safe techniques for deploying and retrieving trawl nets under various sea conditions.
  • Analyze common net damage patterns and implement appropriate repair methods using industry-standard materials.
  • Evaluate the condition of trawl hardware (doors, sweeps, bridles) and perform preventive maintenance as required.
  • Implement emergency procedures for tangled or fouled trawl gear during retrieval operations.
  • Design a basic maintenance schedule for trawl gear to extend service life and reduce breakdowns.

Target Audience

Skippers, deckhands, and fishing vessel crew members involved in trawling operations who need to perform net maintenance, deployment, and retrieval tasks. Also suitable for fisheries managers and safety officers seeking to enhance onboard operational efficiency.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, learners should be physically fit and comfortable working on a vessel deck.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Trawl Systems and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the fundamental components of a trawl system
• Identify safety hazards and apply relevant PPE requirements
• Explain the role of trawl maintenance in sustainable fishing operations
• Describe basic operational principles of trawl nets and gear

Topics:
• Overview of trawl fishing: purpose, types (bottom, midwater, pair)
• Key components: net, warps, doors, sweeps, floats, weights
• Safety regulations and risk assessment for deck operations
• Introduction to maintenance schedules and logbooks
• Basic terminology and gear rigging

Day 2: Trawl Net Inspection and Repair

Objectives:
• Inspect trawl netting for wear, tear, and damage
• Identify common net defects (holes, chafing, broken meshes)
• Perform basic net mending using approved techniques
• Recognise signs of structural weakness in twine and webbing

Topics:
• Net materials: types of twine, webbing, and netting construction
• Inspection procedures: visual, tactile, and tension checks
• Common damage patterns: chafing from seabed, fish handling, snags
• Net mending techniques: knotting, splicing, and patching
• Use of mending needles, twine, and net repair tools

Day 3: Trawl Warps, Doors, and Rigging Components

Objectives:
• Inspect trawl warps, sweeps, and bridles for wear and corrosion
• Examine trawl doors for damage and alignment issues
• Understand the function of floats, weights, and ground gear
• Perform basic rigging adjustments to optimise net spread

Topics:
• Warp construction: wire rope, fibre rope, and swivels
• Inspection of warps: broken wires, kinks, corrosion, end connections
• Trawl doors: types, condition, towing points, and shoe wear
• Sweeps, bridles, and ground gear: configuration and maintenance
• Rigging adjustments: door angle, weight distribution, floatation

Day 4: Deployment and Retrieval Procedures

Objectives:
• Describe step-by-step trawl deployment sequence
• Describe step-by-step trawl retrieval sequence
• Identify common problems during shooting and hauling
• Apply safe handling techniques for warps, doors, and net during operations

Topics:
• Pre-deployment checks: gear readiness, communication, weather
• Shooting the trawl: warp payout, door spread, net settling
• Towing: monitoring net behaviour, warp tension, depth control
• Hauling the trawl: warp retrieval, door handling, net emptying
• Emergency procedures: gear fouling, warp parting, net damage

Day 5: Integrated Maintenance Planning and Practical Assessment

Objectives:
• Develop a trawl maintenance schedule based on usage and condition
• Perform a complete gear inspection and prepare a repair log
• Demonstrate safe deployment and retrieval in a simulated environment
• Apply troubleshooting skills to common operational issues

Topics:
• Maintenance planning: frequency, record-keeping, spare parts
• Condition-based maintenance: wear limits, replacement criteria
• Troubleshooting: poor net shape, door instability, catch loss
• Integration of maintenance with fishing operations
• Final practical assessment: inspection, repair, deployment, retrieval

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practical sessions allow learners to apply inspection, repair, rigging, deployment, and retrieval skills in a supervised deck or simulated environment. These sessions build competence in maintaining trawl gear and executing safe fishing operations.

Practical Activities
  • Net Inspection and Mending — Learners inspect a sample trawl net section, identify defects, and perform mending using proper tools and techniques. (4h)
  • Warp and Door Inspection — Learners examine trawl warps and doors for wear, corrosion, and structural issues, and practice basic rigging adjustments. (4h)
  • Deployment and Retrieval Simulation — In a simulated deck environment, learners practice the full shooting and hauling sequence with emphasis on safety and coordination. (4h)
  • Integrated Gear Maintenance and Operations — Learners perform a complete gear inspection, execute repairs, and demonstrate deployment/retrieval in a combined scenario. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
