Prerequisites

Basic computer literacy is required. No prior animation or film editing experience is necessary.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Animation and Film Editing

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of animation and film editing.
• Identify the roles and responsibilities of an animator and editor.
• Explore the history and evolution of animation and film editing techniques.
• Recognize the importance of storytelling in animation and film.

• Overview of animation types (2D, 3D, stop-motion)

• Introduction to industry software (e.g., Blender, Adobe Premiere Pro)

Day 2: Storyboarding and Scriptwriting

Objectives:
• Develop a storyboard for a short animation sequence.
• Write a basic script for animation.
• Understand the relationship between script and visual storytelling.
• Apply shot composition techniques.

Day 3: Animation Principles and Keyframe Animation

Objectives:
• Apply the 12 principles of animation.
• Create keyframe animations.
• Understand timing and spacing in animation.
• Use easing and interpolation.

Day 4: Character Animation and Rigging

Objectives:
• Rig a simple character for 2D animation.
• Animate a character walk cycle.
• Apply squash and stretch to characters.
• Understand bone systems and constraints.

• Squash and stretch in character animation

Day 5: 3D Animation Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Navigate a 3D animation workspace.

• Set up lighting for animation.

• Lighting techniques for animation

Day 6: Film Editing Techniques – Cuts and Transitions

Objectives:
• Perform basic and advanced cuts.
• Apply transitions effectively.
• Understand continuity editing.
• Use J-cuts and L-cuts.

• Types of cuts (match cut, jump cut, cross cut)
• Transition effects (dissolve, wipe, fade)
• Continuity editing principles
• J-cuts and L-cuts for audio

Day 7: Audio Editing and Sound Design

Objectives:
• Edit and synchronize audio with video.
• Apply sound effects and background music.
• Understand audio mixing levels.
• Use audio transitions and fades.

• Synchronizing audio with animation
• Sound effects libraries

Day 8: Visual Effects and Compositing

Objectives:
• Apply visual effects to animation.
• Perform green screen keying.
• Composite multiple layers.
• Use color grading for mood.

• Layer compositing
• Color grading and correction
• Adding titles and graphics

Day 9: Advanced Editing and Storytelling

Objectives:
• Edit a short animation film.
• Use advanced editing techniques.
• Apply pacing and rhythm for emotional impact.
• Integrate animation and live-action footage.

• Pacing and rhythm in editing

Day 10: Final Project and Portfolio Review

Objectives:
• Complete a final animation project.
• Apply all learned techniques.
• Receive feedback and critique.
• Prepare a portfolio for industry.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
