Description

This course equips extension practitioners with the theoretical and practical tools to evaluate behaviour change and innovation adoption in agricultural and development contexts. Participants will critically assess models of behaviour change and innovation diffusion, and apply evaluation frameworks to real-world extension programmes.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, a basic understanding of extension principles is advantageous.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Behaviour Change and Innovation in Extension

Objectives:
• Define behaviour change and innovation in the context of agricultural extension.
• Explain the role of extension in facilitating behaviour change.
• Identify key stakeholders and their roles in the innovation process.
• Outline the course structure and learning outcomes.

• Concepts of behaviour, behaviour change, and innovation.
• The innovation-decision process.
• Roles of extension practitioners, researchers, and farmers.
• Introduction to the course curriculum and assessment methods.

Day 2: Theories of Behaviour Change

Objectives:
• Describe major behaviour change theories relevant to extension.
• Compare and contrast different theoretical frameworks.
• Apply theory to real-world extension scenarios.

• Theory of Planned Behavior.
• Health Belief Model.
• Transtheoretical Model (Stages of Change).
• Social Cognitive Theory.
• Diffusion of Innovations Theory.
• Application exercises.

Day 3: Innovation Adoption and Diffusion

Objectives:
• Explain the innovation-decision process in detail.
• Identify factors influencing adoption rates.
• Describe adopter categories and their characteristics.
• Analyse case studies of innovation diffusion.

• Rogers' Diffusion of Innovations.
• Innovation attributes: relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, observability.
• Adopter categories: innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority, laggards.
• S-shaped adoption curve.
• Case study: adoption of conservation agriculture.

Day 4: Extension Approaches and Methods

Objectives:
• Compare different extension approaches (e.g., top-down, participatory).
• Select appropriate extension methods for different contexts.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of various methods.

• Conventional extension: Training and Visit, commodity-focused.
• Participatory extension: Farmer Field Schools, participatory rural appraisal.
• ICT-enabled extension: mobile apps, SMS, videos.
• Group vs. individual approaches.
• Strengths and weaknesses of each method.

Day 5: Communication and Facilitation Skills

Objectives:
• Demonstrate effective communication techniques for extension.
• Facilitate group discussions and learning sessions.
• Use active listening and questioning skills.
• Manage conflict and build consensus.

• Principles of effective communication.
• Verbal and non-verbal communication.
• Facilitation techniques: brainstorming, nominal group technique.

Day 6: Needs Assessment and Situation Analysis

Objectives:
• Conduct a needs assessment to identify farmer problems and opportunities.
• Use participatory tools for situation analysis.
• Analyse data to inform extension programme design.

• Types of needs: expressed, felt, normative, comparative.
• Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) tools: mapping, ranking, timelines.

Day 7: Programme Planning for Behaviour Change

Objectives:
• Design an extension programme using behaviour change frameworks.
• Set SMART objectives aligned with behaviour change goals.
• Develop a logic model or theory of change.

• Setting objectives: knowledge, attitude, practice.
• Activity planning and resource allocation.

Day 8: Monitoring and Evaluation Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Define monitoring and evaluation (M&E) in extension.
• Differentiate between monitoring, evaluation, and impact assessment.
• Develop indicators for behaviour change and innovation adoption.
• Design an M&E framework.

• Key M&E concepts: inputs, outputs, outcomes, impact.
• Indicators: quantitative and qualitative.

Day 9: Data Collection and Analysis for M&E

Objectives:
• Select appropriate data collection tools for M&E.
• Collect data using surveys, interviews, and observation.
• Analyse data to assess behaviour change.
• Interpret findings and make recommendations.

• Sampling methods.

Day 10: Evaluating Innovation Adoption

Day 14: Innovation Systems and Scaling Up

• Describe innovation systems and their components.
• Identify strategies for scaling up successful innovations.
• Analyse barriers to scaling and ways to overcome them.

Day 15: Gender and Social Inclusion in Behaviour Change

• Recognize gender dynamics in behaviour change and innovation.
• Design gender-responsive extension programmes.

Day 16: Ethics and Professionalism in Extension

• Maintain professional standards and confidentiality.
• Navigate conflicts of interest.

• Confidentiality and data protection.

Day 17: Integration and Final Assessment

Practicals

Overview

The practicals component provides hands-on experience in designing and implementing behaviour change interventions and evaluation tools. Learners will practice facilitation, data collection, and analysis in simulated and real-world settings, reinforcing theoretical concepts.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Facilitation and Communication Skills — Learners facilitate a mock group discussion on a behaviour change topic, using active listening and questioning techniques. (16h)
  • Practical 2: Needs Assessment and Programme Planning — In groups, learners conduct a mini needs assessment in a local community or using case data, then design a behaviour change programme plan. (16h)
  • Practical 3: Data Collection and Analysis for M&E — Learners collect data using surveys and interviews, enter data into Excel, and perform basic analysis to evaluate behaviour change. (16h)
  • Practical 4: Impact Evaluation Design — Learners design a quasi-experimental impact evaluation for a given extension programme, including selection of comparison group and analysis plan. (12h)
  • Practical 5: Reporting and Presentation — Learners prepare and present an evaluation report to peers, using data visualisation and actionable recommendations. (8h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
