Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Business Ethics

Objectives:
• Define business ethics and its importance in the workplace
• Identify the relationship between ethics and the law
• Recognize the role of personal values in ethical decision-making
• Understand the consequences of unethical behaviour in business

• Ethics vs. law: key differences
• The business case for ethics
• Personal values and moral development
• Overview of ethical theories: consequentialism, deontology, virtue ethics
• Common unethical practices in business
• Case study: ethical dilemmas in the workplace

Day 2: Ethical Decision-Making Frameworks

Objectives:
• Apply ethical decision-making models to business scenarios
• Analyse the impact of stakeholders on ethical choices
• Evaluate the role of corporate governance in promoting ethics
• Distinguish between ethical and unethical leadership

Topics:
• Ethical decision-making models: PLUS, RIPS, and moral reasoning
• Stakeholder analysis and ethical responsibilities
• Corporate governance principles (King IV)
• Ethical leadership: traits and behaviours
• Conflicts of interest and how to manage them
• Group exercise: applying a decision-making model to a case study

Day 3: Ethics in the Workplace – Policies and Codes

Objectives:
• Develop a code of conduct for a hypothetical organization
• Identify key components of an ethics policy
• Understand whistleblowing mechanisms and protections
• Evaluate the effectiveness of ethics training programmes

• Elements of an effective code of conduct
• Developing and implementing ethics policies
• Whistleblowing: procedures, protections, and challenges
• Ethics training: design and delivery
• Monitoring and reporting ethical compliance

Day 4: Ethical Issues in Specific Business Functions

• Recognize ethical challenges in marketing, finance, HR, and procurement
• Apply ethical principles to functional areas
• Analyse the ethical implications of supply chain management
• Understand the role of ethics in financial reporting and accounting

• Ethics in marketing: truth in advertising, targeting vulnerable groups
• Ethics in finance: insider trading, fraud, and transparency
• Ethics in HR: diversity, discrimination, and employee privacy
• Ethics in procurement: bribery, corruption, and fair competition
• Supply chain ethics: labour practices and environmental impact

Day 5: Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability

Objectives:
• Define corporate social responsibility (CSR) and its link to ethics
• Evaluate CSR initiatives for authenticity and impact
• Understand sustainability reporting standards (GRI, integrated reporting)
• Analyse the triple bottom line: people, planet, profit

Topics:
• CSR models: Carroll’s pyramid, stakeholder theory
• CSR in practice: community engagement, philanthropy, and ethical sourcing
• Sustainability and environmental ethics
• Integrated reporting and King IV
• Greenwashing: identifying and avoiding it
• Group activity: assess a company’s CSR report

Day 6: Managing Ethics in the Organisation

Objectives:
• Design an ethics management programme
• Identify risks related to unethical behaviour
• Implement ethics audits and assessments
• Develop strategies to embed ethics into organisational culture

• Ethics management systems: structure and processes
• Risk assessment: identifying ethical vulnerabilities
• Ethics audits: planning, conducting, and reporting
• Creating an ethical culture: leadership, communication, and rewards
• Handling ethical violations: disciplinary procedures and remediation
• Practical: develop an ethics action plan for a case organisation

Day 7: Application, Assessment, and Integration

Objectives:
• Integrate all course concepts into a comprehensive ethical strategy
• Demonstrate ethical reasoning in complex scenarios
• Present and defend ethical recommendations
• Reflect on personal ethical development and future application

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
